NBD (Fender Player II Precision Bass)

Years ago, when I had just started playing in public, a friend organised me a Fender Jazz all the way from Manny’s Music in NY. Long story short, it didn’t speak to my condition at the time.

Fast forward to now and this gem for which I traded in a couple of guitars which I haven’t touched for a long time, including a five- and six-string which are too heavy for me and have active electronics (I prefer passive basses for numerous reasons: mostly, they seem to work better with my personal pedal setup).

This is (as above) a ‘proper’ Fender, alder sunburst body and rosewood fingerboard, just like that Jazz Bass from long ago. It doesn’t weigh as much as my Squier JB and the pickups are a whole lot hotter by comparison, it seems. Took it for a test flight at yesterday’s blues gig and it has a very seductive growl and more low end than the JB, holding its own nicely in the mix and a sheer joy to play. Used Kevin’s 360 preamp into the Tso/Lumin combo and (wonder of wonders) it sounds just like a vintage Precision Bass. I’ll remove all the extraneous plastic once the deal is done, but very happy with it so far 🎸😊

If I was a bass player I would definitely play a P-Bass. I love the growl. I have a soft spot for a Musicman Stingray but the P-Bass is the sound.

I had an early Japanese Squier P-Bass for a long time for recording demos and it sounded perfect. It was a good weight and played well too. Have fun with yours!
