NGD: Finally......my first SG!!! 8-16-23 Update

Nice, I joined the SG club in January and fell in love when first playing. I got the Epi 61 Standard with the Maestro in the same green as your firebird, and I have to admit I enjoy it's chunky neck. Plus the guitar is so light and easy to handle, plus no neck dive!

Awesome score! Love the finish color.

I've owned quite a few Gibsons but never an SG. If I was to get one I suspect it would be an SG Junior because (a) they look so darn cool, and (b) they can sound amazing. But whenever I've though about actually buying one I play my ES-225 and realise that no other P90 guitar will ever sound as good as this. Except maybe my Casino. :)

That Tokai looks amazing. I'm impressed with how tidy the wiring is!

Now THAT is a beautiful guitar. I was looking at Tokais for a bit on reverb, but the overseas shipping scared me a little bit. I never did post a NGD post for my last guitar, but it looks very similar to yours Michael. It's a 2017 Gibson SG Standard in cherry red. I might have to get around to posting about it.

My SG Special Faded has Wolfetone Marshallheads in the neck and bridge, but I put an Alnico 4 magnet in the neck and (I think) the bridge has an unoriented Alnico 5. The neck is pretty clear and still warm while the bridge pickup has a really good chewy midrange sound. My Standard has the 57 Classics and I'm not in love with them. Probably will end up with Marshallhead and a Dr Vintage or Legend.

Wolfe sent me an A5 magnet for the Dr. Vintage when I had it in my Warmoth Strat to get a bit more clarity. I never installed it but I'm considering doing it now its in the SG. The A2 in the bridge Marshallhead sounds really good. I dunno, 3 sets of pickups in this guitar within 8 hours of owning it, I might just play it a while before anymore surgery.... :ROFLMAO:

I asked Wolfe if he could wind the Marshallhead for my SG Special a little hotter to fill in the sound better and the pickup ended up measuring 8.7k on the multimeter which is very close to what the one in my Les Paul measures. So I don't know if he just grabbed a hotter one he had already wound or put a little more winds on the slug side because it does sound a little thicker to me. Then again it could be the magnet because the LP has the regular polished A5. Or I could just be hearing what I want to hear

Just an aside (because I love finding actual pickup measurements in forum searchs) the Legend neck in the LP measures out to 7.36k and the Marshallhead neck in the SG Special measures 8.07k.

Wolfe winds everything from the order, so I'm pretty sure he just wound it to your specs. He's done the same for me. My last of P90's I asked him to under wind the neck by 5% and he nailed it.

Damn I checked that site out, what a temptation. I'm going to have to think long and hard about one of those white Customs. I see some guitars that say "total lacquer finish". So Tokai does make some stuff with nitro it looks like, I didn't know that.

Yeah their higher end models are all nitro finished.

Just FYI for anyone that's considering buying a Tokai from G-Club on Reverb.

My buddy decided to order one after my most recent purchase. He picked one of the $1100 Les Pauls and made an offer of $800 + their normal shipping.

They countered with $898 and dropped the shipping to $90. So basically got the price down by a couple hundred bucks.
I never even considered making offers on these as I've always thought the prices are very fair for what you get, but heck, that's like a $280 savings!

Just putting this out there, cuz I'm helpful that way.......... :ROFLMAO:

I'm definitely doing this when I've got the funds to order a goldtop. Savings like that would cover the import tax I'd pay when it hits the UK.

Welcome to the SG club! I joined in may of 2002, I think it was. I had started playing guitar in ‘96 when I was 11, and my dad told me that when learn how to play guitar….REALLY learn how to play guitar, not just Mary had a lil lamb or something, that my mom and him would buy me a Les Paul. Well that time came around finally, and we went perusing the eBay. And found a 1998 SG Les Paul custom. It was still a ‘Les Paul’ technically. I played that guitar for 20+ years. Love that guitar! Then at 33 I had to have an actual Les Paul, and got a killer TH58. I can die happy now!lol BEAUTIFUL SG, man!!
