NGD on my BD

It’s my birthday today and I had decided to get a new acoustic guitar. I mostly play electric but I found that if I have my acoustic around, I tend to play it more, so I decided to get a nicer guitar (most importantly with a lower action). So today I went to Main Drag music here in Brooklyn and tried a 1970s Yamaha FG-170 (Taiwan made). The guy told me it had been restored by a local luthier. I had been looking exactly for an O model since I used to play classical and am familiar with the shape. I tried I and bought it on the spot. It sounds very nice and it’s very resonant and lively. And it’s a pleasure to play which is very important to me.

Happy birthday! Glad to hear you've recovered with your bout with COVID.
My very first "real" guitar was a Yamaha FG-110. I paid $74 for it at Chuck Levin's in Maryland (Washington Music Center) in 1972.

I gave it to my older brother when he joined the Navy and didn't have a guitar to play. He still has it! Bastard won't give it back hahah
 
Happy Birthday dude it's my birthday today too.

I haven't bought myself anything because all available funds are being diverted to the @MichaelW approved Tokai gold top fund. I'm pretty close to having enough to order one.
 
Happy NGD and BD! I recently picked up a very well-loved fg-140 (red label) and it's quickly becoming my favorite acoustic I've ever owned.

Thank you! I gotta say, I tried a Martin X series (entry level Korean made I believe) yesterday as well and the Yamaha played and sounded ten times better. I’m not one to long for “the good ol’ days” but there is something about old guitars that I just love…

Talking out of my rear here, but I wonder if there's something about this body shape that strikes a unique balance between typical OM sound and something more like a dread. Over the holidays I popped into Chicago Music Exchange and they happened to have one each of the new FS3 and FS5X red labels. I won't be selling my 140 any time soon, but dang these new models are *very* close and I'd probably pick one up if my 140 bit the dust. Also kind of remarkable that the old plywood designs compare so favorably to the newer all-solid ones.
