Rat Builds - LM308 vs LM208?

So there's a hardware store close to me that for some reason has a ton of components...IC's, transistors, resistors, caps, etc. I was looking through their inventory and noticed they had a ton of LM308s for around $10 each and a fair amount of LM208s right above it for like $2 each.

Are these chips basically the same (at least in Rat or Rat-based circuits?) Are there any differences between them that I should be aware of? Any modifications required to the circuit if using one vs. the other?

The 108, 208, and 308 are the same chip, the 108 and 208 are just spec’d for wider operating temperatures.

“The LM108 is guaranteed from −55°C to +125°C, the LM208 from −25°C to +85°C, and the LM308 from 0°C to +70°C.”

If you can get 208s for $2 and they’re legitimate, I’d stock up. Customers *love* knowing they’ve got a “mojo” part in their pedal.

Thanks for confirming. That actually leads me to my next question - is there a simple way to confirm if they are in fact legit? I saw a video on YouTube that talks about measuring resistance between pins 1 and 5. Is that the best way to confirm?

I have a surplus hardware and parts store near me called Ax-Man. It is a goldmine for NOS actives and vintage weird value passives.

There's a huge Orvac nearby that I might have to stop in to check out one of these days. I haven't been there in about a decade so it's probably worth a pop in even though I doubt I'll find much (or even know enough to know what I'm seeing) but it could be fun.

Last time I was there was when I did my very first Vero build and I needed an LED. I popped in to Orvac and bought a pack of like three LEDs for about $5 🤣

Really?! I haven’t been in ax man for ages but maybe I should stop in sometime soon
Yup. I go to the st paul one. I bring my multimeter and transistor tester and sort in the store. They carry new jacks and leds and stuff too. Pretty much everything but enclosures and foot switches.
