Recommended FV1 boards

Dear collective wisdom: I am sorely tempted to take the plunge into building a couple (as in two) of Robert’s marvellous FV1 boards to mark his 5th birthday. And mine, as it happens, since I started building 5 years ago.

It would probably make sense for me to go for those which include the EEPROM to avoid that potential rabbit hole. ‘Sorry, unforeseen delays in delivering your essential EEPROM chip from XYZ since our freighter has last been seen orbiting Uranus, Jupiter, and so on.’ It takes ages for stuff to reach these shores in any case, BUT

I merely wanted to ask for recommendations as to groovy ambient-ish options (à la ENO, Fripp, etc.), maybe not so much multi-FX.

Any advice gladly entertained. Thanks in advance.

The deflector is definitely a cool ambient reverb/delay sort of thing. That gets into the type of stuff eno was experimenting with on Another Green World. Not sure if there’s anything more in the realm of Frippertronics/Evening Star/Soundscapes/Discotronics/tape-loop Fripp & Eno stuff, but I could be wrong.
Everyone here loves the hydra, and while Fripp wasn’t an echorec user, David Cross ran his violin and mellotron into an echorec with king crimson, and in general, multi-head delay is really cool with mellotron samples and keyboard in general if you’re into that.

I think the reverbs and delays on the FV-1 really shine. The modulation sounds, not so much. I have the three-verb and Hydra on my board now.

Ah, a KC aficionado! Larks’ Tongues has to be a high water mark of austere, ‘lopsided funk,’ as a dear departed bass player mate of mine used to describe it. Perhaps I can twist @Robert’s arm to let me order a Hydra board in advance, nudge nudge wink wink. A match for my modular made in electron heaven, so to speak.

Just a thought, if you build one of the Arachnid based projects you can order extra custom EEPROMs and have multiple pedals. I've got the Spatialist eprom which has some nice reverbs in it and also a custom one I ordered with the Radium Springs algo's on it. If you build a project off the Pythagoras platform you can get eproms for both the Unison and the Daydream. The BuggFX Daydream sounds really cool and may be a future FV-1 project for me.

The very first concert I ever went to, I was 12 years old and my best friend's (and bass player bandmate) big brother took us to see King Crimson. It was at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on the "Starless and Bible Black" tour. (Yes I am dating myself:) The lineup at the time was David Cross in a white suite, white violin, white mellotron stage left, Fripp in a black suit, black Les Paul and black mellotron stage right, Bruford on drums and John Wetton. It was also the first time I smoked pot....talk about a memorable experience hahah.

‘You’ve got to dig it to dig it. Dig it?’ Monk

Great story. 😄

Nice! That’s my favorite era of the live stuff. Do you remember the venue/town it was in? Maybe I have that show in my collection

Kennedy Center, Washington DC, hmmmm maybe 1973? Having said that, Starless and Bible Black is probably my least favorite album of that era. "Red" is probably my favorite. Way ahead of its time.

Hmmm, that track listing is missing "21st Century Schizoid Man", I'm positive they played that.
It mentions that a few tracks are missing. They only have the songs listed that they have recordings of

Thanks, @MichaelW and everyone for suggestions. I eventually decided on the Deflector and the Unison Double Tracker (on my wishlist forever and a day). Now a long wait beckons while the local PO decides how long it should take (or whether or not) to deliver these a distance of some 60km from the airport to my house. I have one outstanding order from Amplified Parts which left the airport in February. Someone up there is saying 'No Spirit Box for you, pal,' until you have proven yourself worthy. That could take awhile in itself...

Thanks again, all.
