Reducing noise?

Hi all,

Not sure if there is an answer to this question or not, but I've built a few drive pedals now, only really one is a bit noisy and only when on. But is has sparked my curiosity, are there ways to reduce noise in the construction/wiring or building practices I should be employing to get a quieter circuit? Another question, probably should be another post, but will I actually notice a difference between say a cheap poly film cap and a WIMA? Are the more expensive components like that going to make a quieter better sounding pedal?

no to both.

generally the design of the pcb has done most of the work for you.

- star ground schemes can be useful.
- ensure at least one jack sleeve has continuity to the metal enclosure, to enable shielding.

What pedal has an iissue, if it is High Gain it can have some white noise associated with it or it could be your wiring to Input & Output jacks need to be away from the PCB Board or as listed above, ground issues to the enclosure ie Powder Coat is preventing good ground.

It's the Uber drive, volume all the way up, gain about 1/3. Could very well be the input and output wires, will have a look, might pay more attention to those two next time. To be honest it's not horrifically noisy, just noticed noise where the others made almost none, it's not the end of the world. Really enjoying building these pedals though!
