Reprogramming Intelligent Relay Bypass Controller?

Hello all,

I was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction to modify the function of the ATTINY chip in the intelligent bypass module. As it comes standard, pressing and immediately releasing the footswitch toggles the effect on or off like normal, and holding down the footswitch while the pedal is INACTIVE will MOMENTARILY engage the effect, but holding down the footswitch while the effect is ACTIVE will momentarily BYPASS the effect until the footswitch is released. Is it possible to disable this last function? I don't mind the momentary activation, but I never want to momentarily DEACTIVATE a circuit, and I have accidentally done so in the heat of live gigs. Haha. Would it be possible to reprogram this behavior myself or order a custom programmed chip? Thanks in advance for any replies.

It’s an ATTINY85, which you can think of as a stripped down tiny arduino. In fact I use the arduino computer environment to write code for attiny and flash the code to the attiny through an arduino.

So if you’re familiar with arduino you could write the code yourself. I’m sure Robert could easily send you a custom coded chip. I could send you a chip too (I have my own code, but I think it’s functionally similar to Pedalpcb’s, besides maybe a slightly different length for determining a “hold” for momentary.

Thanks, phi1. I've never actually worked with Arduino. What's the learning curve like and the $ investment in a programming rig? It would probably be more realistic for me to just request a custom chip from you or Robert.

Yeah it's a bit of a learning curve and process to get going, I'm up for sending over a custom chip, you can send me a message.

About the setup, the main cool thing about the arduino is it has the USB flashing system built into it. So you just plug into the computer and hit 'program' in the arduino software. It's a super handy way to learn to add logic to a project, and the 'nano' version is quite small so you can fit it into projects.

To flash code onto the ATTINY85chip , using the arduino as the USB connection, I think I followed this article. Eventually I made a "shield" (a little pcb that attaches on top of the arduino pin headers) to avoid the breadboard and wires.

For relay bypass algorithm, I first read about the concepts in this CODA article. He used a PIC chip which is slightly different, but same concept. Alot of the article is about setting up the flashing environment for the PIC, which wouldn't be needed if using the arduino-attiny style. It's pretty standard micro-controller stuff (reading and de-bouncing a switch input, deciding what to do, and controlling outputs). But he explains it very thoroughly.
