Hi all,
This is a super easy mod and might help somebody out, so I thought I would post it here.
I wanted a nice reverb pedal for my FX loop, so I built a Boing. I wasn't disappointed, the pedal sounded good. And with just one knob it's set and forget.
The only issue I had with it was a noticeable volume drop when connected last in my FX loop. In front of my amplifier there was no volume drop at all. A bit weird.
So I tinkered around a bit, and started with adding more gain to the last opamp. But I wasn't happy with the result. I had a feeling that I was changing the character of the effect a bit, and while I could get it to unity volume in the FX loop, now it was too loud in front of the amplifier :-/
While checking the schematic once again, I started wondering what R7 was doing there, the resistor in series with the pedal's output. To me it looked like the only thing it was doing was increase the output impedance of the pedal. I put the pedal back in the FX loop and jumpered the two sides of the resistor with a wire. I could hear the volume increase. So I took the resistor off the PCB and put a jumper instead. Problem solved, now I get unity volume in my FX loop and in front of my amplifier. Tone stays the same as far as I can tell.
If you don't have a volume drop with it in your use case, then obviously there's no need for this mod. But if you have a volume drop issue, try jumpering the resistor.
P.S.: Pedals that have a similar output section are the Spirit Box and the All-Star Reverb on FSB. They do not feature a resistor in series with the output like this.
