Shortage of electronic components

I'm browsing Tayda website now. Potentiometers, to be specific. 2000 More Arriving Jan 12, 2022... that's great news.. only 6 monts left.
Try to buy MMBF5457 from RS, Mouser. Tayda has them in stock. But who wants to pay 1$ for a piece?
Recently I started to buy components "just in case".

How do you think.. is it temporary?

You would think since COVID hit a year and a half ago that companies would have figured out their supply chain issues by now

I've been piecing together pots from LMS and SBP. They have had a couple of values I was having a hard time finding through Tayda.

Like this but with a knurled shaft. I rarely use right angle mount pots.
But thanks, it's good to have an alternative. Expensive but still better than nothing..

ps. not to mention shipping cost. And now there's also a big chance of VAT.
10 potentiometers - $14, shipping $24 and tax. That would be around $47 total... :)

I'm not sure what their shipping is like to the US, but next gen guitars in Canada is usually decently stocked on pots and other basics.

I'm still hoping Tayda will restock Ge diodes at some point.

Apologies, I didn't realize you were in the UK. It's an unfortunate situation for sure (both the postal frenzy & the shortage).

Was doing some reading about the way the automotive industry is looking for semiconductors and coming up empty handed...

It seems like the manufacturers are mostly focused on making stuff for modern devices...phones, etc. That's a huge part of the market right now.

Automobiles have been using older, outdated tech for a long time due to the fact that they need to meet certain safety standards; switching to newer tech would take a significant R&D investment for the same functionality in a different form factor. Automobiles had been keeping that section of the market afloat for a long time...

Covid hit, automobile manufacturing skidded to a halt, semiconductor plants re-tooled to meet the market demands, and now there's not much appetite to switch back just so auto manufacturers can buy their wares for pennies.

Can't help but wonder if a lot of what we're seeing is downstream of those forces.

Unfortunately we are at the far end of the food chain.. I was hoping things would start to improve but it looks like not

I have a few projects I had planned over the next few months so I think I’m going to be forced into making a tayda order just to make sure I don’t miss out.

Not really an answer to your actual question, but if you have a good component tester to confirm they're within spec I've had surprisingly great luck with smd jfets from AliExpress stores. Fantasy/Vaxny and Aliexpress-Chip Store are two of my go tos and I've ordered mmbf5457s and mmbfj201s from both of them. Op-amps and DIP ICs are hit and miss but that's true just in general on ali. There's a model of 16mm potentiometers all over AliExpress that only come in knurled shafts "WH148" - on a quick search I only found right angles in two values (b10k, b50k) but I imagine there's more if you dig a little.

edit:
- with switches so they might be too tall but: wh148 right angles in b5k, b10k, b50k, b100k, b500k
