I like compressors on guitar. The pump, the thump. The squish.

It’s been a sort-of side quest while exploring the wide world of gain devices. So far, I’ve built the Thumb Sucker, Closed Circuit Booster Limiter, Byrdhouse, and the Median.

This build became practical after the THAT2159 became available in the shop. I yolo’d all the ICs on the board, knowing that the 4558s aren’t the quietest option. I already had a white pre-drilled 4-knob meant for a different build, so I scrubbed the art off with alcohol and used it for this.

I gotta say, I love this thing. It’s probably my favorite control interface for a guitar compressor so far. ATTACK, COMP, and HI are not at all subtle- it’s obvious what they’re doing and have a wide range. It feels very intuitive. I would recommend this if you’re new to compression and can’t really tell what the controls are doing.

This replaced the Median for me as my favorite compressor pedal so far. The Creamery has a bit higher noise floor, but it does exactly what I want it to do, with less tweaking. There’s also a ton of recovery gain on tap.

If you like compression, and the IC is in stock, give it a try. It’s really good.

It's pretty awesome isn't it? I can't believe I wrote this off for years because of the lack of the VCA's. And I am SO GLAD that @Robert bought out SmallBear's stock of the CoolAudio V2159's and are making them available for sale in the shop.

This has become by far my favorite compressor. You should try some lower compression settings as "always on" first pedal. It adds some sumpin sumpin that's lovely.

Your build report helped bump this up in my queue!

I can definitely see it being used as an always on. It gives it a little body, tames out some of the brittle frequencies, smooths out the glassy tones yet remains bright.

It doesn’t have that awkward release where it’s like your dynamics are gasping for air after you pass the threshold.
