This has been a long time coming. I bought this beast from Stickman a good chunk of time ago and worked with learning the ropes. Not too bad to get fairly proficient at it really but it's a bit of a learning curve getting into nuances and figuring out how to streamline patches.
In a live situation it was a TOTAL disaster. Sounded like a crappy fuzz box.
I spent the last week working on patches I snagged from Worship Tutorial (highly recommended) and they pointed me in the right direction for global settings and using IR's as well as stock cabs. In my case everything was based on an early 60's Vox AC30. I commandeered a stereo send to the Front of House, and had the sound guy remove all reverb, compression, and EQ. We use in-ears and I lit up the first patch and plugged my Yamaha Ty Tabor into the Helix and the sound was just glorious. I mean, like, REALLY freakin good. I used a couple of different patches including the Vox, Supro, and Marshall.
REALLY happy to finally report I've conquered this thing. Would it replace an amp in a bar gig? Maybe with a backline power cab. After using in-ears for years I'm a bit used to not moving air with a real amp (or having the amp isolated).
Running a stereo setup certainly enhances the illusion of running an amp pushing air, given that the modeler is a bit more in your face, and having a bit of movement in the room. A dash of ambience from reverb/delay softens it as well.
