This Week on the Breadboard: The Electronic Orange Diamond Retro Fuzz

I got a hold of one of these and had to trace it. It's a modified Silicon Fuzz Face, hand-crafted in the Czech Republic by Electronic Orange. Beautiful construction in a bullet-proof steel case.

In the SINGLES position, C2 and the PU trim pot are bypassed. In the HBS position C2 & PU trim provide adjustable bass cut. The COLOR knob is a variable treble cut. The overall tone is quite smooth across the range of knob settings. For the true vintage FF tone, set the switch to SINGLES, dime FUZZZ & COLOR.

I built my breadboard per the schematic above with four differences:
1. I deleted the HBS/SINGLES switch and made trimpot TR1 a knob. I changed the taper to C100K for a smoother sweep.
2. To increase the available volume, I deleted R4 and changed C5 to 68nF so the treble cut (COLOR) tuning was more-or-less the same.
3. I subbed 2N2222A (HFE = 101) for Q1 and 2N2219A (HFE = 53) for Q2.
4. I used a series protection diode instead of the parallel diode shown above.
