Transistor sockets in Tone Vendor MK 1?

Hi

I’m building (maybe trying to satisfactorily build) a Tonebender MK 1.

I’m after the Ronson/Bowie and Yardbirds fuzz tones.

I was wondering if the Mill Max TO-5 transistor socket fits onto the board?

As far as I can tell it would but I thought it costs nothing to ask the question.

Thanks for your assistance.

Yep. Should fit fine.
Also, cut up SIP sockets work and are easier to desolder once you find the magical set and bias.
If you're not going to breadboard it, you probably want them for bias resistors too.
Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried breadboard a Tonebender MK 2 and it was pretty noisy. I think using transistor sockets mean low noise because the pcb layout and ease of transistor swapping. The only issue is changing resistor values to accommodate the transistors.

Thanks again for your assistance, I appreciate your help.

For bias resistors I suggest putting in trimmers, easier to tweak the trimmer than make multiple resistor swaps. Once biased measure the resistance of the trimmer for appropriate resistor to install permanently.

Absolutely breadboard a TB MKI before assembling the PCB. It can be a particular circuit, and auditioning transistors/bias resistors will allow you to find the best set without overworking the board/sockets.

As a recovering socketholic, I second the breadboard and then soldering BJTs. TB and similar fuzz circuits are simple enough. If you're quick and careful, it's just fine.
