trouble with pedals not making much effect in the signal chain

Hello to all, new to this forum, please forgive if this post is redundant to something in the archive, or is out of place. I recognize this forum is for mostly DIY pedal builders. New to pedals in general. I'm having a situation where my pedals don't seem to cause much effect to the signal going to the amp. These are new and used pedals from reputable manufacturers. My cables appear to be patent, guitar signal goes into amp with no problem when pedals "off" or "bypassed". I'm plugging into hi input of first channel on two tube amps, both reputable and working. I've removed batteries from pedals, isolated batterie contacts inside pedals with electrical tape, and am using wall warts with correct polarity and voltage. Only one effect between guitar and amp to not complicate issues. There are not effects loops on the amps I'm using, signal goes into front of the amp. At present, the most successful pedal is an mxr chorus, gain/boost pedals don't seem to alter signal much at all. I have one gain pedal which has a 12ax7 in it that changes the signal somewhat. Brand new fuzz pedal doesn't seem to alter signal. One delay pedal works a bit but not much.
It just seems I am doing something fundamentally incorrectly, as several pedals are all ineffectual. There is some common problem which I seem unable to identify. Any suggestions or incite would be apppreciated.

It may sound silly. I’ve made this mistake in the past. But make sure the input and output of each pedal is correct. As in, the cable goes from your instrument, to the input of the pedal, and the next cable goes from the output to the input of the next pedal. If the pedal doesn’t have labels for the IN and OUT, it is most likely IN on the left, OUT on the right.

thank you for this suggestion. I double checked on the sided-ness of the individual pedals' input/output, several are labeled and interestingly, input is clearly on the right and output on the left, for those marked. I confess i'm stumped.
