Trumpet (mini-bone) Transistor?

Any PNP transistor works here. I’ve even used low leakage, high gain germanium transistors here. You just need to make sure that the gain is in the right range—too low or too high and it won’t do the trumpet tone thing. Shoot for an hFE between 170 and 200 and it’ll sound great.

As an aside, make sure that you use mid-gain NPN transistor for Q1, something with an hFE between 300 and 350 (the Tayda 2N5088’s are usually in the middle of that range). If the hFE is too high you can get an unpleasant, harsh distortion tone at higher gain settings.
