What's with the Zener Diode bias thing in the marigold

Hey,

just hoping that someone can explain the use of the Zener Diode off Q3 to set the bias voltage.

why do this instead of using variable resistors, like in other pedals.

Just a guess, but I suspect it's protection (because it looks very much like SHO circuit, that typically has a diode like that to prevent static charge from blowing the transistor).
