The DBA Photo Modulator just dropped and it's a fun concept for sure. I of course also quickly thought surely this is simple enough to wire up on my own. I've got LDRs and a spare TRS Neutrik jack. Oliver practically encourages it as most if not all of the technical details are included in the official store listing:
The three different LDRs I have on hand are the GL5528 (10-20K light, 1M dark), the GL5516 (5-10k light, 500K dark) and the Jameco ValuePro CDS photocell (5k light, 10M dark). Which would best to use here, as none are identical to the LDR used in the DBA Photo Modulator? (Side note, I got laid off last month so I'm not trying to order new components right now even though yes, LDRs don't break the bank much in my limited experience).
Also, is there any reason I should change the resistor value as well?
Thanks in advance
The PHOTO MODULATOR uses a cadmium-sulfide photoresistor connected between the tip and ring of the ¼” jack. Its resistance changes with light:
Bright light: <1k
Complete darkness: >1MΩ
A 47kΩ resistor connects the ring to the sleeve, mimicking the behavior of the potentiometer found in most passive expression pedals. This configuration ensures compatibility with a wide range of effects that accept standard expression pedal input.
