What a remarkable boost it can be. I struggle with getting Strats to sound good - it's a real love/hate relationship. Well after the talk here recently after #MichaelW built a Colorsound OD I pulled mine off the shelf to try with a new OD I built. The new OD is Timmy-based and has been discussed here but that's not the important bit. By itself the new OD wasn't enough to add any real muscle to the Strat (although it's killer with anything else I plug into it). But put the Colorsound OD in front of it and bloody hell! It sounds perfect! It really has the glorious Gilmour midrange going on which makes it so big and vocal. Adding gain with the gain pot of the Colorsound adds some growl in a wonderful way, helping the Strat cut through. Switch off the main OD and the Colorsound doesn't sound distorted by itself but you really hear the difference when the main OD is on. It's also pleasantly quiet. Using boosters can often add serious amounts of noise - not this one.
I much prefer the Colorsound over a Mystery Meat or Klon or TS for this purpose. It really seems to bond with a Strat bridge pickup the way few other pedals do. And it works with low or high gain. Really impressive, and to think how long ago it was designed.
