Zener diode in Boss BD-2 CLR circuit

So a buddy of mine on a guitar forum found a "Keeley" mod for his BD-2, he did the mod and said it sounded good, but his led stayed dimly lit when the pedal was disengaged, I asked him to send the mods he did, one was replacing D11 with a resistor, which I thought was odd, so I found a wiring diagram and D11 is a Zener diode in the CLR circuit (wtf) so I told him to reverse that, I guess there is some level of voltage in the BD2 circuit that the Zener blocks and the resistor value used wasn't high enough to bleed it off, my question is why would you even want to change that? It sure isn't going to effect the sound!
