Now Playing... What are you Listening to Right Now?

Grooving to Pink Floyd's "Echoes" right now and it's happnin'. That first groove section where David builds that deliciously length crescendo then counter-pointed diminuendo lead work, backed up by their pumping bass, the kickin' skins and those wailing keys. Then David changes up his backwards wire CryBaby to indulge in a conversation with whales. Suite!

Talking Heads are too good.

I remember buying that cassette at a truckstop somewhere in Indiana while working. I had a lot of windshield time between job-sites and I spend way too much time in my head when given the opportunity, so this trip I spent some time with Mr Byrne and Co.. There are some really well put-together tunes inside.

Back in high school, due to a dispute with the guitarist about whether or not he needed lessons, I quit my ska band along with the trumpet player. We started a singer songwriter duo that mostly did covers of S&G and the Beatles. A little Bill Withers and "Friend of the Devil" too. I switched to guitar and he to piano. Paul Simon can jam. Way harder than the other stuff I was hacking my way through.

I got to see him a few years ago, though my heart is with his 60s-80s material, the new tunes were pretty great. It was a bucket list item to see Bakithi Kumalo groovin'. I'm pretty sure he's the only bassist alive that can rock a ukebass without looking silly.
