NPD! Lollar P90's - Demo

For sure, I'm super impressed with the pickups in the Epiphone and the two cheap jazz basses I recently got. The pickups in my $148 Harley Benton are Alnico's (Roswell) and sound better than the ones in the Squier (also Alnico).

I will probably wind up putting Fender Custom Shop 74's in both basses but I'm no expecting "shiver me timbers" kind of difference.

I think in MOST cases I change pickups because I'm looking for a different sound....and in the other cases, it's because I'm a pickup snob.....there I said it......:)

Nothing wrong with being a pickup slut. I'm the worse kind I'm a boutique pickup slut. Thankfully in the UK we have a bunch of small pickup companies who make fantastic products but also don't cost obscene amounts of cash.

Yah but they get obscene to buy them here in the US hahaha. I like a lot of the Bare Knuckle stuff but honestly, I'm most impressed with their "budget" BootCamp line.

Ok so I still have power and internet. Ian slammed into Port Charlotte as a very strong Category 4, just a skootch below Cat 5.

That's the worst it's been in over a decade.

It won't get over where I am until tomorrow morning but I expect conditions to worsen through the night.
But for now, my soldering iron is still hot! Woohooo!

I installed the new Lollar P90's I ordered (and mentioned in my "What's in the Mailbox" thread.)

I got a 50's Wind for the neck and Standard wind for the bridge.
Lollar's are typically vintage output. In this case the 50's Wind neck came in at 7.3k and the Bridge 9.3k.

The original Epiphone Pickups both came in around 8.03k. Yet they sounded hotter and had higher output. Just goes to show you can't rely on resistance alone to judge output.

The Epiphone P90's are actually very good sounding pickups. They did a great job recreating the 50's style P90 and a testament to how good this guitar is all around.
I was a bit on the fence about whether to even upgrade the pickups at all, but the neck on the Epi was a bit warmer and muddier than I wanted. (And as @Dan0h observed, my GAS can get fairly motivated hahah).

It's not a "glaring night and day difference" but rather subtle. Which again, speaks volumes of how good the Epiphone P90's are.

Anyway, some before and after clips below. All the settings were identical. The Epi's had a bit more output. I would typically use a boost which I did not for these clips.
Just some light compression, reverb, delay and my Space Heater tube pedal at the end of the chain for some warmth.

Damn dude. Your playing has hypnotized me. Love it.

Bare knuckle are obscenely priced in the UK now as well. My brand of choice these days is Mojo. Marc makes phenomenal Pickups at very reasonable prices (compared to bare knuckle). The only problem is he's really popular so instead of having a giant wait list he opens his store until his order book is full for the month and then closes it until next month. I've seen it close anytime from 4th-12th most months.

I never heard of this brand, but he makes some really wild designs!

Oh man, he makes a humbucker sized P90 Staple........I might be getting in trouble here.......

It's funny you should be talking about pickup swaps - as I said, rarely swap pickups but recently got a Tele Thinline (should probably do a NGD post) after finally finding a guitar to like! I've been playing it a lot this week and finding the neck pickup a bit lacking. The guitar is a '68 Tele Thinline RI and while the bridge pickup is great the neck pickup is just too wimpy and unbalanced with the bridge. So I started looking around at Tele pickups and there are some cool alternatives around these days. Then I remembered I might have something in my cupboard and sure enough, there was a pair of Tele pickups in there. I think the bridge pickup is a Fender Broadcaster style - it could be a '52 Tele as well - but I have no idea what the neck pickup is. So I took a shot and stuck the unknown neck pickup in the new guitar. It has three plastic coated wires - a yellow one for the cover ground, and the usual black and white.

Of course first attempt they were out of phase so I swapped the black and white leads and now it's in phase - buttoned it all up and man - what a great sound. The neck and bridge now balance perfectly, the in-between sound is outstanding and the neck on its own sounds very full, fat and purposeful. A huge improvement over the grey bobbin original. Seriously, I couldn't have asked for a better neck pickup. It could be a Twisted Tele but I really can't say. And I saved myself some $$.

That's awesome, would love see a NGD post! I love my "hacked" Thinline. Ya, Tele neck pickups are weird. I've heard so many folks talk about how "useless" the neck pickup on a Tele is. Yet it's my favorite Tele position. The "Twisted Tele" is actually a Strat pickup in Tele dressing.
Might be why it's so popular and might be why you like what you're hearing.

I had the Twisted set in a "Baja Tele" that I sold. I loved how that guitar sounded, hated how it played. By that time the "Baja's" had become "collectible" so I sold it for more than I paid for it. (Whodathunk a Mexican Tele would become collectible?)

There was a lot to like with the Baja. They had the look right, the neck was fantastic and the Pickups were great. It used the same spacing as the American models so parts were interchangeable. My criticisms were the S1 switching, the scratchplate was stupidly cheap, the finish is too plasticky and most of the ones I've played have been really heavy.

It's weird because when I have tried the Twisted Tele neck pickup before I have never liked it. It must just be the right pickup for this guitar. I do believe that there is no one perfect pickup - just the right pickup for a particular guitar.

Waaaay back when a '73 Thinline was a 10 year old guitar I bought one for Aust$350. It was poo brown, had grubby Wide Range pickups and a kinda thick finish. Not sure if the thick skins had started in '73 but it wasn't good! It played ok, sounded pretty average and didn't exactly fire me up. So i cleaned it up and sold it for Aust$500. Now when I see what they go for... And really I don't think they're worth it. But I've always wanted a natural finish '60s Thinline.

Yah, I think those points pretty much nail what I didn't like about it. The neck profile was heavenly, so nice to see a "fat" profile on a less expensive guitar. But mine was heavy as hell. And the finish was thick on the neck and fingerboard. I toyed with the idea of modding it, scraping the thick finish off the fingerboard and yanking out the baloney S1 wiring......but as I said it seemed like it was more valuable selling it stock than going down the mod route. I replaced it with my Nash Tele. Yes, it cost a good bit more but it's become my #1 goto Tele. Absolutely love it.

Weren't the Baja necks soft-v? Or maybe I got it wrong..

In any case, I can't listen to these clips. Lollars are too expensive and I can't gas over them.

Fattish soft v-ish. It was a great neck! I think they renamed that model the Vintera or Player Vintera? I can’t keep up with Fenders offerings. Basically the same guitar without the S1 (I think)…

Yeah, went Vintera / Roadworn depending on the level of wear you wanted. I love my Roadworn Strat, I think they punch way above their price class.

I can't decide if I love this or just lust for it but.... yum.

Update:

Well, my SmallBear order from the sale showed up today. In the order I pretty much stocked up on all the guitar tone caps I'll ever need for a long long time. (So he says....hahah).

Just on a whim I decided to try some "Tropical Fish" caps in my LP Special, so I swapped out the ones I initially put in there.
Again, .015 for the neck and .033 for the bridge.

How do they sound? Well.................I can't tell any difference from what I had in there before....but they ARE cool looking and that's what's important right? :ROFLMAO:

The man loves making the more out there Pickups. The only reason I have Montys PAFs in my PRS and not Mojos is he stopped making some more traditional Pickups altogether to focus on the rarer stuff. When I was talking to him Marc said everyone does a PAF and a set of 60s pre cbs strat Pickups. He only started doing more traditional Pickups again because he was getting harassed by his regulars who didn't want to go anywhere else.
