THISPickup placement does have a big affect on sound. Strings get looser the further they are from the bridge or nut, hence having two pickups to select different sounds.
The middle pickup is moved only slightly and aesthetically, I can't get over it. Maybe there is a difference but in a blind test I bet I would.not be able to tell the difference in sound.
The reasoning for the placement in the youtube demo from PRS makes no damn sense.
There's not necessarily a "good" or "bad" place to position a pickup but it DOES have an impact on the sound.
I found this out when I built my Tele with 2x P90's.
Since I converted this from a Filterton x2 body I didn't have a lot of options how to place the pickups. But the bridge pickup, if I had my druthers could be skootched towards the neck by about a 1/4". Between the Tele bridge plate style bridge and the placement there's a pretty big disparity between neck and bridge pickups in terms of a balanced tonal response. I need to roll off the tone quite a bit for the bridge.
Thinking about converting this to a Baritone, I think it might work better.
