Hit me with your amp/cab sims!

Hey all!

Been getting a little more into recording at home and am realizing how deep of a rabbit hole it is (and I thought pedals themselves were a significant rabbit hole :ROFLMAO: ). I'm currently running my guitar/pedals into a Focusrite, with a couple free amp/cab/IR plug-ins. I recently got that Joyo American Sound pedal to see if having an actual pedal made a difference for amp simulators recording-wise. Jury is still out on that one. I'm running all of that on Reaper.

I'm curious what those of you who also record stuff use for amp/cab sims? What's your setup like? Are you using an actual amp/cab pedal like the Iridium? Plug-ins? Just rawdogging it into the interface? Any tips you'd be willing to share for someone who is just beginning to dip their toes into that realm?

I’m using UA amp pedals, latest is the Lion 68, also Tonex pedal/plugin, Tonocracy and Neural DSP plugins. I also use a Bogner Ecstasy he’d into a Suhr Reactive Load into an Ox Stomp (UA)

I've been looking into some of the UA lineup. I've heard good things about the Dream. Seems like they've got all kinds of options out there.

most the time It’s will go through my amp on a THD hot plate (sometimes I bypass the power amp section using the send on the fx loop) into reaper and use BiasFX2( if I could go back in time I probably would have went a different route but it works.) as an IR loader, the IRs I used can range quite a bit depending on what I’m doing and over time ended up with a ridiculous library of IRs… there are a ton of free plugins that are really good so try some of thoes before you throw money down on plugins just because everyone and their mom use it.

Yea my goal is to spend as little money (if any) as possible on amp sims and all that. I've been getting ok results with the ones I've found so far, but am curious what other people use since there are so many out there.

Audio Assault has some pretty good stuff for stupid cheap. There are always sales going on for 50%+ off, multiple IR packs for a couple dollars, etc. Check them out, then join their mailing list for the sales.

I'm running my pedal board into a beta lead preamp (the pcbguitarmania one - actually not a total piece of garbage!) into a unicab into a focusrite 2i2. Recording in Reaper. I recorded this a few weeks ago with the setup to test out the guitar I 3D printed. I don't totally remember what my signal chain was - I think one side is a Precipice Overdrive (Greer Black Moutain), the other a Dingo (VFE Alpha Dog) both on the hi circuit of the Beta Lead. The bass is running into a Brown Betty set to the BE-OD side on the lo circuit of the Beta Lead. Please excuse the drums as they drop out of time. I'm out of practice.

I just grabbed a couple packs. I both love and am overwhelmed by the amount of options that come with only spending like $5 haha

Another vote for UA Lion and UA Stomp OX. I stopped using Tonex, Neural DSP, etc.
I think I might have to grab one of those at some point. It seems like there are a ton of great plug ins out there, but a part of me doesn't mind paying for the convenience to just plug a pedal in and be done with it.
