Heads-up (not a good one) -Tayda Wah Shell

I’ll be the first to admit that this is kind of a “bitching” thread but I’m posting both to give people a heads-up as well as, on the off chance, that maybe people who have dealt with this same product have some useful advice. I was going to include this information in my ultimate build report but since the shell is causing more problems then it’s solving, who knows when that build will be complete?

I purchased the generic wah shell from Tayda. Although it doesn’t have any trademark on it or instructions, I suspect it’s the same one that sold by Daier and likely is what a lot of US places that sell these shells sell (say It fast, and add “by the seashore”.)

I knew not to expect perfection but:

  • Most of the parts are junk. The self tapping screws are neither the right size nor self tapping. You’ll have to buy your own off Amazon or somewhere.
  • The rack tensioner, in addition to being very thin plastic, does not actually reach fully up to the rack to hold it secure against the wah pot. The only way I can get the wah pot to keep constant contact with the rack is to force the pot as close as I can toward the back of the pedal in its little binding area and tighten the nut to hold it in place and hope I don’t strip the threads on the pot. Still, it loosens over time and you have to constantly readjust it once you start feeling the gears of the pot slipping on the rack.
  • The rack itself is not in the same place as on most wah shells. On my other wahs, the distance from the inner edge of the block that the pot mounts on to the center of the rack is 17 mm. On this, it’s 12 mm. Which means that the rack is 5 mm too far to the right, so, whether using my Dunlop Hot Potz or my new Area 51 pot, only half (at most) of the rack is making contact with the gear of the pot. (Picture attached, apologies in advance for all of the lithium grease, which I added to hopefully try to minimize the squealing sound (more on that below). So I think this actually exacerbates the pot wanting to move since there’s this weird pressure from the rack focused on one edge of the pinion gear on the pot.
  • The teeth of the rack are spaced differently than the teeth of the gears on either of my pots, so you get an ugly ratcheting sound and feel when you manipulate the pedal. (I looked into buying a real Dunlop rack to replace it but I don’t think it’s going to work because the Dunlop rack is held on by a pin, whereas this generic rack is fastened in place with a screw and a bolt, meaning that I think the hole is far too large to accommodate the Dunlop pin to keep it in place.) Interestingly, the kit did come with a wah pot gear to place on a pot, and I’m assuming that it is better suited to fit the oddly sized gears on the rack they supplied – but I don’t know of any easy way to get the existing gear off of the pot without damaging the pot.
  • The squeaking. Dear God, the squeaking. I think the fact that the teeth of the gears don’t match the teeth of the rack, plus the rack only contacting a very small part of the gear on the pot, makes this thing have a horrible squeaking sound every time you move the treadle. Think an angry pigeon that just doesn’t want you to play music involving a wah pedal.
Anyway, I actually really liked the look of this shell (brushed aluminum is a neat alternative to standard black) but I’m either going to have to try to find a broken Dunlop for parts online or gut my Tearjerker* to get this build to work because this shell sucks. (*Gutting the Tearjerker isn’t a great option - not only because I’d like to still keep that pedal but also because I drilled holes in the enclosure to move the trim pots out to external knobs. Seems like having an enclosure drilled like Swiss cheese is a one-way express ticket to a scratchy wah pot.)

Sorry for the rant, but I hope it helps someone else who is thinking about going this route for a wah build.

Thanks for an honest report. I gave up for expression pedals and buy a $20 Nextar , but I don't want to put a wah in one of those enclosures.

I have one of those things that chews up perfectly good materials called a " desktop cnc " which can even destroy aluminum.

I'm working out an enclosure for the Tearjerker wah board with files other people can use, might make some on request.

I ended up with a cheap ass Dunlop Wah from Guitar Center’s used bin for about 45 bucks.. stripped out the board, reclaimed the inductor, jacks, and kept the pot.

**MIGHT** get out the die grinder, some rolock sand flap wheels and polish her up.. did the same years ago with the old BYOC wah board.

I have two of those, but from TaoBao. They're the same thing sold on Amazon, Alibaba, Amplified Parts ... many places.

I don't remember what I paid, but it was certainly cheaper than Amplified Parts and probably even Tayda.

When I stumbled on some "shells" at SynthCube on sale, I snagged a few...

You won't find them if you type in "Wah", "Wah Treadle", "Wah Enclosure"... not even "Wah Shell".

Search for "shell" and you get this or something like it:

Battery snaps? Euro-rack nonsense? — — — — Note the price of the "Expression Pedal Shell" 🙀

Too expensive to bother with. May as well buy a used wah and gut it. Unless ...

... You wait for a 35% off sale — but even then.... $50.

I just noticed they're available in Zinc or Aluminum.

Not sure which material mine are, but I can tell you they are robust, heavy, come pre-assembled ... Very high quality. I've written about them before, in this thread:

I bought one of those generic shells recently as well. They suck ass. Putting mine together made me feel like I was losing my mind. As others said above, the screws made no sense, the rack didn’t match the gears, I had so sand down every edge to keep from cutting myself while handling the damn thing. The price of a used/working Dunlop is probably a wash when compared to the heartache + $$$ spent on those generic shells. Damn them to the fires of hell.

So does anyone sell a decent quality wah/expression shell that isn’t $80?

Or is eviscerating a used commercial pedal still the best option?

I had a vague idea about making a crossfader foot pedal to use with my patchbay/mixer channel inserts…

Comparing the economic aspects, I’m leaning toward a used commercial pedal ans almost always making the most sense.

The crap shell I bought was $35. The exact same crap shell is apparently being sold by US vendors for closer to $45 (for example, Amplified Parts sells the exact same thing, which I verified when I read the reviews and people had the exact same problems I did).

If you are lucky, someone will be selling a nonworking commercial pedal for much less than either of those prices. And even a working used Dunlop wah (one of the garden variety models, not some special edition) can easily be found for much less than the $80 or so for the nice enclosure referenced above. Aesthetic quality may vary – some may look pretty good, some may be beaten to shit, so which is the best fit for you really depends on what you are looking to use the enclosure for and, if applicable, how much elbow grease you’re willing to put in to fix the signs of wear and tear. I would only put the $80 into the enclosure shown above if I absolutely had to have an enclosure that looked pristine and I didn’t want to pay the extra $20-$30 to just buy a new Dunlop pedal in the store.
