I thought about piggy backing on @Guardians of the analog's build report but then thought better of it, hahaha.

Here's my version of the same board. (Thanks Chris!) It's about as vintage of an OD-1 as you can get.
My other OD-1 is the PPCB "Oddity" which is a later version of the OD-1 with the dual op amp.
And also the AionFX Corona Legacy with has a couple of mods built in. (The bass mod is extremely useful)

I spent quite a bit of time last night comparing the new Sheepy/GOTA OD-1 to my Aion Corona.
I used legit 1S1588 clippers in both and they sound super close.
The Sheepy/Gota one might have slightly lower noise floor, but all these seminal pedals are noisy pedals in general.
The PPCB Oddity sounds like a complete different pedal.

This is another Tayda Sand Brown in 1590b. (I hope it doesn't look purple:) I finished it after dinner last night and my workshop lights are not conducive to photography.

This is a nod towards my Increment build, which is based on the OD-1

That is a clean build. The bare wire look works great with that layout.

I have one of those “brown” sand tayda enclosures. It’s not what I think of as brown. In person it looks more gray and just a little bit brown. Especially next to something brown, like this:

Well it IS an 808....just an earlier version. The differences to the LGSM are subtle. Wanna build one?
I have it next in the queue but between what you and Chris have said about it, I’m about to but the pre amp on pause (because it’s going to take a while) and go on a side quest

Well tbh as much as I love the OD-1 for pushing amps and such the SD-1 is better.
I have a top secret SD-1 project in the works (on the way from JLCPCB) and if it works out and verifies it may be a better solution.

I think Chris would agree that the SD-1 is the more useful pedal.

What is it about the SD-1 you like better?

The gain range is wider on the SD-1, the compression is better (asymmetrical clipping) and it's brighter and the tone knob is better. Also the mids feel slightly different and better.
Did some reading, Seems like the OD-1 is different enough from an 808 to give it a try, the SD-1 might be to similar, my only apprehension at this point is I think I tend to like the smoothness of symmetrical clipping a little better. But I also don’t tend to crank the the drive on ODs much so we will see.

i've built all of them. OD-1, SD-1, TS808, OD808,
while they're all kinda the same, yes there are subtle differences that matter.

stock OD-1 is thinner, tamer, and smoother than SD-1. it's probably the most boring of the lot.
OD-1 imo is closer in sound to 808 than SD-1.
OD808 and TS808 are basically identical.
SD-1 is the most aggressive, probably due to being brighter / richer in the high-mids, which also makes it the most satisfying for goosing a high gain amp.

and then of course there's the maxon ST-9 that i will not stfu about. cos it's better than all of them.
essentially does the same thing as an SD-1 but goes even harder, doesn't have as much of a low end cut (thicker), and the mid control allows you to dial in the mid-boost frequency (200-2K) to suit whatever rig you're using.

Tell me about the Maxon ST-9. I'm on a roll with building some of the old Maxon pedals, OD880, OD855, OD-01, man I love them all!

it’s the ‘super tube screamer’.
basically it’s an 808 with a mid frequency boost opamp gain stage in front of the clipping stage. mid freq is adjustable, but the gain of the mid freq boost is fixed.

aionfx has ‘current’ and legacy versions of it (‘cirrus’) i prefer the legacy board style, so i built one of those.
the build doc has some info about the circuit and history.

the VFE Ice Cream / PPCB Frost Drive is essentially a modified/hot-rodded ST-9 with more tweakability. that is also a brilliant overdrive.
every time i plug into my frost drive im always surprised / forgotten how good it is.
