Great pedal stacks…

I found a really amazing sounding pedal stack tonight. Son of Benson (lite drive at about 9:30) > Luxury 763 > Magnetron (set at medium speed with long tails almost to the point of oscillation)
Oh man, I zoned out for almost an hour with this. Jazzmaster neck pickup into clean Fender.

What are some of your favorite build stacks?

They weren't pedals I built for me, but I really had fun playing the Informant into the Cataclysm the night I finished them. Thought they played really well together.
Also built a Muroidea with a Pro-Filter as a 2-in-1 box with an order switch and it's a killer combo.

My current favorite:
Any Reverb -> Low Tide -> Optical Compressor (Baja Optical Limiter on my board)

The reverb wash interacts AMAZINGLY with the lowpass gate on the Low Tide, and the compressor smooths out the lowpass gate volume drop & brings both the reverb & random modulation to the front. I usually leave the reverb on a long hall setting and the compression at noon. Even small changes to the LPG, Mix, and Depth on the Low Tide drastically change the sound, and it responds really well to both delicate and aggressive playing dynamics.

I've been digging this combo super hard lately, there are just sooo many unique sounds available. I really see the Low Tide as more of a texture modulator than anything else as it really rewards changes in your playing style. I also keep a Madbean Dirtbaby before the compressor & a Sag-heavy Barbershop before the reverb (for even more texture control).

The one I keep going back to is : General Tso’s compressor>Dwarven hammer>muzzle>gain channel of recto. And after that I can’t make up my mind on modulation, delay and reverb... I want to start experimenting with splitting the signal and running different parallel chains.

I find it hard to decide on a Benson or Broadcast to build.

I really want to build a low tide at some point. I had thought it would be cool to run a delay pedal 100% wet into the low tide and then mixed back in with the normal dry signal. It would sort of get the meet maud delay. However, it would require having an effects loop in the delay pedal. I have the Chop Shop sitting on my desk ready to put together. Were there any parts that were tricky to get for the Low Tide? I am probably going to go through the build document to order the components tomorrow.

Two on my board that have become permanent:
- Squidward (Green Ringer) -> 2 Sticks of Derm
- Ocelot (OC-2) -> Hyper Fuzz

Once something's in my amp's effects loop I consider it less of a stack but any modulation on the input with a Spirit box in the effects loop is pretty addicting

Small Clone > Defouler Distortion (DS-1) = Nirvana (in every sense of the word).

Crybaby > Small Clone > clean or dirty amp = such a sweet and soulful sound. Add slow or really fast phaser (in my phase the Aion Redshift) in between for a psychedelic twist!

Whammy (set to octave up harmony) > Bayonet Fuzz > DAW with Valhalla Supermassive (set to a pretty long reverb on Gemini mode, no amp or cam sim) = a beautiful and tragic sound. Almost a pad with the reverb mixed high, but dialed back it’s a chilling solo sound.

Not hard at all, you should and need to build both. The broadcast & Simulcast are my favorite pedals of all time and the benson is most likely #2. I have them both and they are very different imo and both deserve a place on your board.

Edit: as a side note the broadcast & simulcast are transistor picky in that every transistor I tried really had a big difference on the sound. I suggest auditioning several until you land on the sweet spot for your ears. But when you do it’s sonic heaven. I’m a big fan of these pedals. The benson sounds amazing with any legit J201 you just have to set the trim correctly (voltage wise and then to your ears for taste).

Which ones should I buy to try out with them? And which transistors did you end up liking best?

For the bc549c I actually used Tayda but for the oc71 I tried multiple different options including a few different oc71s which were $$ but worth it. Both my Duocast and simulcast landed on different oc71s and they sound magical. The weird thing is if I swap the oc71s around they don’t sound very good. Each pedal reacts differently. That’s why I suggest you try every thing you have on hand and go with the one that sounds magical.

Just jammed with my Minibrute 2 synth sequencing into the Aion Isotope (part of the IVP preamp) - it sounded really gnarly with an LFO gently sweeping the Cutoff and Resonance on the synth, then I used the Bass and Treble on the pedal to swell in some squelchy resonance. It was the sonic equivalent to that gum with the candy goo in the middle.

Paired with my Defouler Distortion > Mr. Black Boost Tiger clone for more volume > DAW with the Overloud Gem Mod (a Dimension D style plugin) I used this for some wide power chord blasts around the synth.

Had an NIN kind of vibe, definitely feeling industrious today 🤖

Post some audio or video of that. Sounds insane!

Love my small clone, is there a board for those anywhere?

I just completely lost an hour to this. Low gain Blues driver settings into a parthenon using a strat with the volume on 10. It sounded so good.

Also I used a Klon as a clean boost at the end for an extra bit of love.

With a bit of delay, harmonic trem and reverb I think that’s me done.
