Quick Question on Aft Preamp (EQD Bows)

There is a 10K resistor (R2) in series with the larger (100nf) input capacitor that is not used when the 4.7nf cap is engaged by the toggle switch. My quick question: Is this resistor intended to reduce the gain through the larger capacitor, to be more in-line with the smaller cap - or does it...

    Chickenhead Cordon Bleu

I finished a Chickenhead build with a few mods (after first building stock) and several socketed components: - Replaced the A10K boost with B10K - Replaced the B100K cap blend pot with A500K and wired in reverse (ala Naga Viper), giving a typical tone control sweep from most bass (full CCW) to...

    Low Gain Silicon Transistors

I've been experimenting with piggybacked transistors the last couple days. 2N2369, 2N4123, 3903s (hfe 70-90) etc of course all work in a FF, but I think I am hearing something 'different with mid-gain devices dialed in with piggybacking. Something maybe more complex with the texture...

Interesting point but I'm not sure its that binary. Where do you put Brian Wanpler?

Questions about hybrid Fuzz Face biasing

According to Electrosmash among other sources Q1c / Q2b should be ~0.7v with a germanium pair in a "perfect" Fuzz Face. With a silicon FF as I understand, Q1c would typically be ~1.2v - 1.4v. But what about a hybrid fuzz face with low gain silicon Q1 and low gain Q2 germanium (Q2c is at 4.5v)...

    Pre-Gain pot taper?

Thanks for that. :) Its not really a Fuzz Face - as I said above same topology, but borrowing some bits from a Meathead. PRE-GAIN is as sensible as "pre-boarding" a plane, (getting on before you get on?). But, yes it's a gain knob at input (before the coupling cap) done as a variable R. Since...

    Pre-Gain pot taper?

Building on a FF topology, I am adding a pre-gain pot at input, currently using a C50K and leaving the ground open. I've tried a B50K and I think I am finding the C taper to feel more linear through the range. I am now contemplating a 100K for some additional cut to the input signal, but at the...

Stuff you wanted to know but were afraid to ask

Given: Many pedals with a 9v battery installed will slowly drain if left with the input jack plugged in. Question: If there is a 9V source also plugged into a switched jack but not applying power, will the battery still drain? i.e. Does plugging into the jack short the battery (+)? TIA

T W on the BB with Chuck and Gator: Hellbender/Pagebender Hybrid

Around 1981-82 my friend in HS tried calling Buck, and spoke to Mrs Roeser.:D How about Soft White Underbelly? ( you either know, or you don't)

Opinions sought on a BC capacitor hack..

Similarly, I realized I could hack some sockets for an optional emitter resistor (or jumper for 0R). I made the BC and E pieces separately so they can be used one only, or both together. There are probably boards that don't have the real estate for this, but the stripboard method in the OP will...

Opinions sought on a BC capacitor hack..

OK, after a poor night's sleep I came up with a better way that is much smaller, uses less materials and takes less effort. Credit @Robert for spacing the transistor pin pads at .1". On this particular board, the transistor pins form a triangle, but the same would work for 3 pins in a line. All...

Opinions sought on a BC capacitor hack..

I have been tacking BC caps onto the back of boards, which works fine. However, I wish there was a utility / daughterboard for main boards that do not accommodate them - so the caps can be socketed along with the transistors they are paired with. In trying to find a workaround, I came up with...

Tonebender MKii Silicon vs Carbon Black (EQD Black Ash)

I have no idea :ROFLMAO:, I only used the Carbon Black board for its topology, but never built it to the original BOM. I do have a 2nd board, so maybe I will build it to its spec.

Tonebender MKii Silicon vs Carbon Black (EQD Black Ash)

So, I built it: a near-standard silicon ToneBender Mkii on the Carbon Black board. It works great / sounds great. Using 2N4123 / MPS2369 / MPS2369, it is biased around 7.7v / 1.6v / 7.7v and there is still some room to go higher. I replaced a couple fixed resistors with trimmers, so I'll have...
