UK law is you can write what you want on your own stuff as long as it's not for sale I've copied a couple of commercial designs for personal use. The only person it affects is me. As someone with no design background it was a good learning experience

100% agree - the regulator is soldered into the socket on the top side. The light reflected in the solder makes it look like copper
