Okay, then that is not what is causing an issue in this case.

Input impedance in this circuit is less than 100k. That can cause some audible loss of high frequencies if you are using 'true bypass' all the way. Try to connect some pedal with an active buffer before your Dandy Horse in your signal chain and check if that helps.

Another soviet NPN germaniums are GT404. However they are even larger than usual MP38-like stuff. GT404A are usually low gain (~50 or so), while GT404B/D have rather high gain, sometimes more than 150, and GT404I/E are somewhere in between those. Not very consistent but that is a common issue.

btw, soviet JFETs also have same additional 'leg'.

Most likely it's not a reason for the issues you have. Make sure Q3 is not touching IC pins, that is not clear from the photo you posted. Also check Q3 pinout and connectivity between components around Q3. Q3 should have around 8-9V at the collector obviously.

Actually with a stock version at minimum gain you'll have it somewhere around 20 before the clipping diodes. So there should be some light overdrive at minimum gain.

It should work just fine. Did you use 2SC1815? Keep in mind those have rather not a common pinout.

Gilmour used to use the MXR Dyna Comp back in the day. But it is so not obvious on the classic Pink Floyd records to me.
