LOL! I'm guessing he meant to type E-bowElbow to control the volume pedal? That would take me some practice. Maybe armpit?
You can put Jeff Beck in that club, surely, he was influenced by them a little.I LOVE how Gatton could do a steady 1/4 or 1/8 note comping with his thumb, something that might be normally covered by the piano-player, and then smoothly solo over top of that rock-steady comping with his finger tips, with dips and swells and swooning phrasing — sounded like two completely separate guitar players...
So, to get back to the thread topic ... how the hell did he do that?
The guitar player with two brains?

I did type EBow but autocorrect prevailed in making me look dumb again.LOL! I'm guessing he meant to type E-bow
I knew it was the autocorrect. I keep editing my posts.I did type EBow but autocorrect prevailed in making me look dumb again.

Awesome.Cool topic!
Here’s one I’ve always wondered about:
That weird almost “steel drum” like sound that’s throughout the song. Very similar sound at the beginning of Kerosene from the same album as well.
I assume it’s guitar-based. Big Black used a drum machine but no synth stuff as far as I know.
I’ve read the usual rundown of Albini’s gear before: Percolator, IVP preamp, aluminum-necked guitars, metal picks (some things mention them using “notched” picks, but I’m not really picturing where you would cut a notch in a pick and how it would effect the sound).
Anyone know any more particulars about how this specific sound was achieved? Or maybe someone’s gotten a pretty similar sound via alternative means?

Ahh, the dreaded “playing technique”; no-one makes a PCB for that!At about 2:08 in this clip it looks like he's playing regular harmonics.
Not just technique, but also enthusiasm. You have to really attack the strings and then you'll get pretty close to that sound with any bright amp.Ahh, the dreaded “playing technique”; no-one makes a PCB for that!
space station is my voteI think this effect is made with a +1 and +2 step harmonizer
I've made a similar effect on a multi effects pedal. I think it would be neat in a regular kind of pedal
Would a good tracking pitch shifter/harmonizer be possible with a FV-1 chip? like a diy POG

I think this is another case of it's just the player and some distortion. Bucket head is insanely awesome.I think this effect is made with a +1 and +2 step harmonizer
