Is this the first FOG report from the group buy?
The EHX Micro POG is among the last of the commercially-built pedals on my board. So when I saw a DIY contender I was excited.
I like the knob layout of the POG, so I moved the center knob off-board and in-between the other two. I also scooched the PCB down a bit to avoid that side jack nonsense. Still, the build itself is simple, solder a few components and plug in a module. It fired right up no problem. When powered on, it takes about a full second before it's ready, and the default state is "on".
Now for a comparison
If my only factors are tone and play-ability, it's no contest. The POG puts the FOG to shame. It stands for Fast Octave Generator- but that must be marketing. It's not even close.
Where the FOG wins is board real estate and DIY street cred. I'm going to be fair and give the FOG a chance at band practice tomorrow.
If you want fast DIY tracking, Schult's Poly-Octave for the Terrarium is it. It sounds great and feels even faster than the POG. I turned my terrarium into a GuitarML Seed and gave it to my brother. But I think my next step will be to build another terrarium with limited controls and make it a dedicated Poly Octave pedal.
