Sanding (Is) The Pits

@jwin615 - looked for an assorted pack of those Sand Demon (aka SandNET?) discs, but I think they're only available in the 5" size... That's a shame, because they look perfect. I'll have to pick a few grits and just get em a la carte.

I saw both the SandNET ones and the Hook And Lock discs - it looks like the H&L have the suction holes, but the SandNET doesn't... Wondering what to go with if I get that Dewalt orbital... Although maybe bits of aluminum can be suctioned through the SN ones even without the holes..?

It's is sand net. I can't find the variety pack either. I had grabbed it at home Depot around fathers day iirc(always tool sales). May have been a one off just for HD.
Any dust should go through the discs. Though, I don't use a vac when I use them. A couple of drops of water and some paper towels does the trick for me.
The course grits will kick up some wood dust though

Very weird to offer it in one size but not another!

The diablo stuff is definitely high quality, but it's priced accordingly.

I've also had good luck with cheap off-brand abrasives.

I got some from this brand last year that seemed fine.

That's a pretty good deal. I'm sure the Diablo discs are fantastic, and although I have a super tight budget I'm still considering them. You've used them for (slightly) wet sanding enclosures? Do they last for a couple boxes or are they toast after one? The durability of those Diablo discs seems excellent.

Can't vouch for them wet or on metal unfortunately. I've only used those on wood.

@jwin615 - I'm borrowing a 5" Bosch orbital and I just ordered some 3M Cubitron mesh discs, very much like the Sandnet ones, looks like.

The discs are hook and loop and should attached right to the Bosch's backing pad, but is there any reason to use an additional "connection" pad like this?

I assume that would be ridiculous overkill (or simply not work), but at the same time I'm afraid that I'd damage the Bosch backing pad if I wear through the mesh disc without realizing it. Borrowing this sander to try it out - don't wanna mess it up! :)

Edit: plopped these in the cart, seems like a good idea! Interested to know if you use em...

You won't wear through the pads easily. I haven't worn through one yet. Knocked/torn them, yes.
I haven't had an issue with sticking but supposedly some of these new style sanding pads have a different hook and loop system.
From home Depot QnA:
Hello Kris! Thank you for your question and interest in Diablo sanding accessories. The Diablo Performance Pad is intended to be used with the Diablo SandNet sanding disc. The Performance Pad helps save the life of the tools base pad by reducing wear on it and will provide a little contour ability while sanding. Hope this helps!

If you're only doing a couple of boxes I don't think it's a big deal but if you're gonna polish a bunch, maybe grab one.

Thanks J! Yeah… I have a bunch to do, so I went ahead and got that pack I linked to. Better safe than sorry, but that’s awesome to hear that the Sandnet ones haven’t worn out too much on ya. The 3M ones are supposed to be about as good, evidently.
