In the middle of a build that calls for an MPF201, which I cannot find. I know I can sub a J113 or a 2N5485, which I also don't have. Just wondering if I can safely swap it out for a J201, which I have plenty of.

It might seem ridiculous, but for someone who has little to no experience with a Rat circuit (and I realize that I am in the minority here), this is a question that has been perplexing me for a while now.

I'd have to see the circuit. The taper doesn't matter as much as the value. The taper determines how the pot responds (or actually vice versa -- how the circuit responds to the pot). Regardless, the total resistance value of the pot has more to do with how it interacts with the circuit than...

The noise is clearly a digital artifact. If the EEPROM has been eliminated and the CD4049UBE has been eliminated, I hate to suggest this, but it could be a bad FV1.

Correct. Trying to find a low-power, low-cost, and decent-sounding bench amp. I have amps for gigging. I'm just looking for something that I can have on my bench that is tube based, and that I can push into overdrive without waking up the neighbors.

Don't get me started. I've seen so much BS about not grounding input and output jacks and not grounding shielded cables for fear of grounding loops. Little do people know that the difference in resistance between a coper wire and an aluminum enclosure can cause a grounding loop. :rolleyes:
