Are you using a new batch of LEDs? Did you buy a new batch of parts. This seems odd that you've been building these without issue and now you have two giving you problems. I feel like some good detective work might be just as beneficial as some good troubleshooting here.

It's been my experience that this should always be the first place to start with a volume issue. A wrong resistor value can cut your signal by a factor of 10 by just misreading one color band. 👆 @GizzWizzKing said is way more likely to be the problem than anything you'll find on Reddit...

Have you tried a different LED? This one might be just causing a bigger voltage spike than your others.

I know the feeling. I think you should let your daughter do them with markers -- if nothing else, it's something that you can bond with her about. Those are the kind of memories that will stick with her throughout her life.
