I agree with PedalBuilder... I've gotten a ton of germanium off of Ebay from sellers in the former Eastern bloc (Ukraine and Estonia mostly), and I've had great luck with all of them... diodes and transistors.

I'd gotten a request for a Peavey Decade Preamp - and since PedalPCB has the Decadence Preamp board - I got cracking! The overall circuit is really pretty basic. It has a basic 3 band equalizer, but most of the actual work is done by the diodes which are set up in both soft and hard clipping...

Are you using the thinner or the thicker ribbon cable? I adjusted in all directions with mine and it still pierced the insulation (I'm using the SBP thicker ribbon cable).
