It will "work" in the sense that it will be a functional pedal/circuit. A comparison would be the difference between 4148's and LEDs for the clippers. They will both "work" but will sound different. You could always socket the components and switch em out when you're ready down the road.

the "best" answer is to breadboard it. 2 LEDs can share a single current limiting resistor. In terms of the resistance amount that depends if you've got the superbrights or not. Not sure if really an "issue" since it's meant just to kill the "hiss" from other circuits. I've got this pedal and it does a decent enough job, but not enough to say "this is the only noise gate I'll ever use". I do want to try out a Muzzle and compare, but THAT chip is holding me back.

I think the "crackle" just means the gate is too clamped and cutting out wanted signal. Are you running a high gain setup?

CCW makes it clamp down harder. It’s a little counterintuitive like the filter control on a rat. Do you still have noise regardless of the knob setting?

Looking at the datasheets for a 1590A and specs at the shop for the PCB, you'll have a really tight fit if you were to lay it flat inside. Considering there are no pots you should be able to squeeze it in there just fine, albeit slightly crooked. With a lid on you won't know the difference.
