Ideas needed for bass guitar filter/distortion pedal effect

Listening to that Radiohead bass sound, all I can think of is a Moog Ladder Filter. It has that softly-grainy saturation and a sweep of the cutoff frequency knob with a bit of resonance to help it cut through the mix. I have the Kassutronics Ladder Filter on my breadboard right now and I...

    Breadboard Components

I haven't had many components snap from breadboard abuse. Do your resistors have chunkier leads like most standard 1/4W metal film resistors, or are they thin & floppy like 1/8W? I have some cheaper 1/4W metal film resistors from Amazon that have the thin leads, and although will work in a...

    Cleaning PCB

I've heard of people using brake cleaner, with mixed results. They are usually acetone and/or methanol, with a bit of toluene in there. Acetone will melt some plastics, so it may not be the best option, but methanol should work fine (although it's toxic, so keep it off your skin & work in a...

    Low Tide

LM358 is a fine sub for LM258. The 258 is "industrial" grade whereas the 358 is "commercial" grade, which mostly affects the temperature range. I used the 358 and it works great.

    2sk208-Y vs 2sk208-R Low Tide

This calls for the 2SK208-Y, but you can probably get away with a 2SK208-GR (higher Idss) - I also saw someone in another thread using the -GR variant. The -R is 2 Idss bins lower than the -Y, so I wouldn't recommend it. I'd use the J201. Another option is the 2SK30ATM-Y, which has the same Vp...

    Cleaning PCB

With 99% IPA, I usually have to douse the board (or apply with toothbrush) & let it sit for a minute before I start scrubbing with a toothbrush. Then dry it off and FULLY clean the toothbrush with IPA. Now you should have the easy stuff off, so you can re-soak the toothbrush and go at it again...

    DMD-2 Delay

That's a really cool word man, you learn something new every day! I used to work in the olive oil industry and would run across versions of the words oleo/olio/oli from Spanish & Italian oils all the time (olio means oil in Italian). It's an interesting dichotomy because edibles oils are one of...

    DMD-2 Delay

Great lookin' build in a color you don't see often enough. I also love the digitalis/foxglove pun, defo need more chemistry/pharmacology-influenced designs out there! What is the origin of "oliofonix"? All I can think of is the glugging sound of vegetable oil being poured ?

    Another Hydra

I love the 2-tone knob choice! It really helps separate the mix circuitry from the delay circuitry. Where did you find those black plastic-tipped toggles?

Google Sheets Template for Component Inventory?

Not necessarily what you're looking for, but I use this sheet of common components when I'm ordering parts for multiple projects all at the same time. It also works for stocking common components when you're going to be breadboarding or modding stuff and you're not sure exactly what all you'll...

    Six String Stinger oddness

Yeah the metal coil thing is exactly what I couldn’t find a name for! It’s definitely good practice to tin your tip at the end of each work session, but you’re cleaning and re-tinning the tip b/w each joint or several joint as well, right? I usually wipe the tip on both sides and just barely...

    Six String Stinger oddness

Judging by the photo, it looks like you’ve got a soldering iron with enough heat, but you might be able to improve your connections if you really focus on cleaning the tip between each part that you solder. I noticed a big difference when I moved to a copper coil versus a wet sponge. It’s...

    Universal mods?

Look up a “Decade Resistor Box”, combined with a few different caps on a breadboard and you can test out any RC filter you could imagine. Diode clipping mods are really popular, there are a few solutions out there where you can switch between different diodes in different orders, directions...

Jfet sockets and Sky Blue Dual gang pot

Recently soldered a dual gang pot to a 5x5 strip of vero board using the same drilling technique used on all vero builds to break the connections between the bottom and top pot rows. It worked great, and you can always cut longer pieces of board if you want to make it easier to solder multiple...

    tone chasing...

Bari nation unite! I've had the same problem going in to a keyboard amp (after DI & line level mixer) and I haven't found a pedal-based solution yet, but I did find a rack based one: a Peavey T.G. Raxx. In essence it's a combination of a 3-band passive tone stack into another 3-band active tone...
