What size screws does Tayda use?

Future archaeologists will get the wrong idea if they dig up my homesite and find so many pristine baggies of 4 pedal screws that I have totally lost. But I go to a local Ace Hardware and try screws until I find one that fits. It's been 6-32 but I think I have a couple (from a few years ago)...

Anyone else trying to learn circuit theory?

If you have free access to linkedinlearning (formerly lynda.com) through a local library, there's a good series by Barron Stone on general electronics, about 9 hours total but super easy to go at your own pace. When Medhi (Electroboom on Youtube) isn't zapping himself/his stuff, he has a series...

    Short legs on transistors

With the old radios, I've started snipping away the circuit board until each transistor or GE diode is on its own island, and then try to isolate each lead, if it's feasible. Then, it usually takes just a flick down the lead with the soldering iron to free the whole lead and leave it clean. It's...

For a second I thought I saw a tele neck being used as firewood for that video.

DEMO Nordic Metal 2.0-GCI New MT-2

Nice! All a Metal Zone needs is a cool hand on its knobs, and perhaps to keep it safely separated from... Sammy Duet has a couple videos (live chat excerpts) about his use of the MT-2. Like this one:

    Pauper diodes? Really???

I got a couple MA858 from Retroamplis, along with some 1N3070 and 1S2473. Vfs read in the .800s with a TC-1.

Couple questions for the amp builders out there

I built the AX84 Firefly on this PCB from Ronsound. The build guide has a Mouser BOM that makes part-sourcing idiot proof. I wound up with an amp but remain an idiot, at least more than I'd be after a more-hands-on project. In any case, the hardest part was getting the chassis...

    Noob Question - Relays

I had a 3PDT fail on one of the first pedals I built (an IC Big Muff that has just always been indispensable). I don't think I've actuated it 10,000 times over ~15 years, but maybe I shortened its life with ham-fisted soldering. I once fabbed a board using Mictester's relay switching scheme (on...

    Favorite bass overdrive circuit?

I like the plain old stock Boss Blues Driver on bass as an OD into a bass amp's drive channel, or a into suitable dirt pedal and then into a clean amp. Madbean's Blue Steel has options specifically for more bass, and Chuck's suggestions for the Cobalt could be focused toward bass.

    Fiddly screwdriver question?

I get the cheap Harbor Freight ones with the molded handles. I'll get some higher quality ones as soon as I develop non-abusive habits with them.

    Rat with a 3-band EQ?

Inverted Cross makes the Ratsaw, which adds the HM-2 tone control. It's one of the choices on this page. I haven't built it.

    Storage Questions

I use the envelopes they came in, or put them in similar ones, and file them in a long narrow box. Adding an odd value to a decade just goes with the flow and it's all good. Same with ceramic and film capacitors.

X7R MLCC - R U scared of them? Should I be? Should we all?

I take no offense at that! IMHO the interesting part is the discussion that ensued. FWIW Joe also posted a listening test on his site. I trust his ear the way I trust James Hoffmann's palate, and they both tend to argue that some distinctions don't amount to a difference in the outcome. Back on...

X7R MLCC - R U scared of them? Should I be? Should we all?

Nothing to add on the STEM side, but Joe Gore (a musician with a formidable ear) reported out a test of capacitors several years back, on freestompboxes.org. It was an interesting discussion of interesting data. Here's the link--I think you need to be logged in...
