Relay Bypass – do I really need one?

There is plenty of open-source code for microcontrollers. Shamelessly linking my own code, and the credits and links section of my README has links to other open-source implementations. I'd argue the only really tricky part of writing simple on-off mcu code is the debouncing, and that's a...

Relay Bypass – do I really need one?

Random thoughts… I prefer soft-touch switches, either for use with a relay bypass system, or even a Boss style electrical switching scheme. But that’s my personal preference. To those who prefer mechanical 3PDT I say cool! (Unless they don’t post gut shots of their builds, that’s not cool! 😎)...

Sunnyscopa Film-Free Laser Jet Waterslide Notes for New GW1-PRO Glue

Edit: see the great, more comprehensive tutorial on these waterslide decals by @Guardians of the analog (GOTA): The 2026 revised film free decal tutorial. What follows isn't intended to be a tutorial, but more of a living notes document, particularly with regards to using Sunnyscopa's new...

AionFX Cepheus (Cornish CC-1) - "Egregiously Expensive Crunch"

This is my build of the Aion Cepheus Amp Overdrive based on the Cornish CC-1. Aion's description of this pedal and Cornish pedals in general is good; he goes into even more detail in the tracing journal. The same board can be used to build the higher-gain GC-1; Aion's build docs have the BOMs...

Chuck D Bones Modded Dark Esbat / Ember Boost

Just wanted to post a follow-up. I've been using this pedal since I built it, and it's pretty much exactly what I wanted: a Spark Booster better tuned to my needs. Chuck managed to read my mind when he tuned and tweaked this circuit! Comparing the modified Dark Esbat to my Cast Iron, the Cast...

T W on the BB with Chuck and Gator: Hellbender/Pagebender Hybrid

Because of my infatuation with the Animals Diamond Peak mod, which is a similar circuit that also calls for low-gain silicon transistors, I've got some notes on some you might be able to find: 2N4123 - Tayda - HFE 84-106, most at 94 MPSA42 - Tayda - HFE 85-108, most 85 or 95 2N2369A (plastic...

Phaser Folks: EHX Small Stone vs Boss PH-1R?

Thanks guys! I pointed him to this thread, hoping to get a little more direction, and he said: He also said he'll watch some demos. But based on his comments, and the feedback here, it sounds like the PH-1R is probably the better fit.

Phaser Folks: EHX Small Stone vs Boss PH-1R?

I have someone who wants me to build a phaser, either a clone of the EHX Small Stone, or the Boss PH-1R. Looks like Aion has boards for both of these, the Sunstone OTA Phaser and the Emerald Resonant Phaser, respectively. I haven't even played a phaser, let alone built one, in decades. The...

Chuck D Bones Modded Dark Esbat / Ember Boost

I assume you're referring to this discussion. Note that this Dark Esbat CDB mod shown here uses a different switching system: it uses a CD4053 for the actual circuit switching - it's an electrical switch, as opposed to a relay/mechanical switch we discussed in the other thread. Sure...

This Week on the Breadboard: The Dark Esbat

I finally got around to making a PCB for this! Build report here: Chuck D Bones Modded Dark Esbat / Ember Boost. Spoiler: it's exactly what I hoped it would be, a TCE Spark Booster with the mode/mids knob better tuned for my purposes. I have a few extra PCBs for anyone who wants one. I can...

Chuck D Bones Modded Dark Esbat / Ember Boost

A few years ago, I build the PedalPCB Ember Boost, which is based on the TC Electronic Spark Booster. This is marketed as boost, which it certainly is, but the "fat" and "mid" modes also make it useful as a light overdrive; the Baxandall tone stack gives it a fairly flexible EQ. The core...

    Custom microcontroller-based relay bypass - update - v2.0 board

Addressing a question that came up in this thread: If you have a micro controller for which there is a prebuilt image, then you don't need to do any compiling, you just need to flash the image. The ATtiny13(a) is one of the micro controllers for which I have precompiled images. The project's...

    MattG's Relay Switching

(I would have replied sooner, but I've been traveling with only my phone and spotty internet service.) This is so cool, you are the first person to "discover" this via GitHub, rather than through these forums. And if you haven't seen this, here's a forum thread where I first discussed this...

    Voltage regulators

I believe the LP2950 also has a lower max current compared to the LM78 regs. In fact, they make LM78 regs in the really big package that are made to be bolted to a heatsink. I spec the LP2950 for the relay bypass PCBs I've made, both the microcontroller based design, as well as the CMOS hex...

    Voltage regulators

That's a good point, I totally forgot that you always pay the voltage drop, regardless of regulator. Where I was coming from with that was the no- or extremely-low load case where the regulator's quiescent current becomes significant. In this specific scenario, the fancier regulator does help...

Omitting a pot so its hardwired at 0?

Note that's only true for a linear taper ("B") pot. For logarithmic or audio taper ("A", "C", "W"), the noon/50% pot position is not 50% of the pot resistance.

DEMO My most asked question, it's not what you think!

As requested! Laying against one of the acoustic panels I just received, trying to damp the liveliness of the practice space.
