Has anyone tried the 2N404 in the Duocast/Simulcast? I have to do a digi-key order and I saw they have 2n404s for a fairly reasonable price. OC71s are crazy expensive.

I noticed that in the schematic the diodes are reversed relative to the usual direction of current flow--reverse biased right? Could it be that these diodes have a very different reverse voltage drop relative to typical germaniums?

Just checked and it is 820 ohm, on the DMM it measures 816R

addition: If the diodes are the problem, is there a silicon diode that should work?
