This Week on the Breadboard: The VHT Deliverance Preamp Emulator

Maybe I don't understand correctly, but wouldn't a single diode in series with the tone stack cause half wave rectification? Or does the voltage divider with the 5k6 prevent that somehow?

    1n34a sourcing for hm-2

I've kinda given up on chasing 1n34a, they've become very overpriced. A BAT41 will work perfectly in this circuit and you won't have to chase NOS parts. While they're not intended as clippers, that config does contribute to the distortion characteristics of the pedal in that they generate cross...

What amplifiers do you like for testing how a pedal design/modification sounds?

Deluxe Reverb for the kind of stuff that makes sense for, PV5150 and Mesa Dual Rec for the kind of pedals that makes sense for. I really like the power amp of the 5150 so that's what I use for preamp type pedals, or for the more edge of breakup type preamps the FX return of the Orange Rocker...

    Duocast Transformer

Sorry to necro this I guess, but I thought I would mention that the TL and TM series use different core sizes, so while under optimal / linear circumstances they should behave identically, if you care about inductance, resistance, or you are saturating the transformer, they will not respond in...

    Capacitor question

It's generally considered better to use a low ESR capacitor in this situation which MLCC capacitors are, one of the situations where X7R is a better choice than C0G.

    Stereo Line Isolator

Nice, if you built it using 1:1 transformers it will also function as a Re-amp box when run in reverse to go balanced to unbalanced.

Is it possible to create a brickwall limiter that doesn't disort on over the limit peaks?

You're focusing too much on the specifics, the important take away from this discussion is that the pickups can't be responsible for your problem, but one way or other, the guitar setup is.

Is it possible to create a brickwall limiter that doesn't disort on over the limit peaks?

Pickups just translate the vibrations of the strings to electrical energy. They can't even out dynamics. The problem you describe is down to the setup of the guitar. The best thing will be take it for a good setup so the neck can be adjusted and the frets levelled.

    Futzing with FETs

How did you choose the P-chan JFET? Been thinking of getting some in for tinkering. Had my eye on the J177 as it's used in some of those AMT designs.

    External SSD drives

I have to echo @vigilante398 here. Don't use an SSD for backup purposes. If you are only plugging it in once a week to do the backup, much better to go for reliability over form factor and speed.

    Friedman Mini

I would say all these heads have the same dimensions and footprint and they simply didn't have room for a couple more pots and knobs. Hence switches which take up less room on the faceplate.

Is it possible to create a brickwall limiter that doesn't disort on over the limit peaks?

The Clipping section of Chapter 24 (Gain Control Elements) of Doug Small's "Small Signal Audio Design" details some really good designs for this idea. It should be noted though that distortion is inevitable in a clipped signal, all a great design does is reduce distortion before the clipping...

    Budget Baritones and Tariffs

Doesn't Firefly have one of those Baritone options and they are from the US? It's so depressing here in New Zealand, we don't have these cheap quality Chineese brands and shipping from the the UK / Europe is the same price as the guitar.

    GAR 2520 or OA10 Schematics

Hello, does anyone have a lead on schematics like the GAR2520 or OA10? I want to incorporate some of these into some designs, but ideally I don't want to have to buy one of the kits as I'd rather be able to convert to SMD to use in some of my own layouts? I know there are schematics of some of...

Who has built a FET City Drive?

I think MOSFETs tend to be a little noiseier in general compared to say JFETs?

Fun with CMOS - part 3 - Emma ReezaFratZitz (with Boneyard mod)

How do CMOS gates differ from op-amps when it comes to configuring their gain and frequency response? I normally use https://nz.element14.com/op-amp-gain-calculator but don't know the theory when it comes to CMOS.

Boutique Pedal Manufacturers Are Feeling the Tariff Pinch

I think we're being a little over critical of the guy here. I think he was just feeling the grief of a failed venture and wanted to share his story. I do think it's valuable to tell because everyone will have their own circumstances. I do think it's a good reminder, and opportunity to burst the...

    Positive Ground Circuit Redesign??

The LT1054 seems to have become favoured more recently for this and has a high clock and doesn't seem to have the heterodyning issue.
