Needle nose pliers. Insert the lead longwise into the jaws, pinch, rotate, repeat. Works wonders.

Based on the link you posted and 2089s being PNP, I assume you meant 5089s? Unless you have an all-PNP version, which I'd be interested to see!

I didn't, because I didn't really like the sound of the Si diodes. I'd assume they're similar to the Germanium diodes, maybe with a stronger effect?

I have the gain trimmer at about the max it can go, before it just makes a little sputtering sound and stops outputting anything. There's a sweet spot in a little bit of the range of the pot travel where it doesn't do that, but it doesn't seem to really affect the volume of the initial note too...
