How to Test NPN Transistor Beta with Breadboard and Multimeter

I'm having some transistor bias issues with my breadboarded Muffin here. As the collector voltages are way too high on all 4 transistors I'm wondering if I got a 'special' batch of 2N5088s from mouser. Is there a simple circuit that I can build on a breadboard that would allow me to measure...

    Muffin Fuzz (Rams Head)

Output is weak and far less gainy than my EHX Muff. Output of Q3 sounds much better. I think Q4 runs out of headroom. I swapped out and tested the 12k resistors. All are 12k. To check LTSpice, I also modelled the BMP circuit shown in electrosmash as that has voltage check points on it -...

    Muffin Fuzz (Rams Head)

I found a problem. I had a set of 180k resistors in my bag labelled 100k. So all 4 100k bias resistors were in fact 180k. I was wondering who changed the laws of physics, but this is a better explanation. HOWEVER: this brought all 4 base voltages down to ~0.6V which is what LTSpice says they...

    Muffin Fuzz (Rams Head)

All the caps I used in this build (except the power supply) were not electrolytic - I have film caps in the values that the schematic identified as electrolytic. Does this matter? In the model above, that would be C3, C8, C5, C7, C12, C10, and C11. I'm still wondering why my collector volts are...

    Muffin Fuzz (Rams Head)

I'm breadboarding the Violet Rams Head version of the Muffin Fuzz. Output seems low. Looking at LTspice, I see the collector voltages are supposed to be 4V and change, but 6.6V at Q4. All of mine measure as 7V and change. I checked all the resistors, they are correct values. Base voltages are...

    Filter Design for Specific Tones

The Duncan tonestack app is a good way to experiment with the BMP tonestack. I'm having a problem with my breadboarded BMP at the moment as if I take the output off the collector of Q3 it sounds great, but if i take it off the cap after Q4 it sounds thinner. There must be something wrong with my...

    Filter Design for Specific Tones

One design that works well with a 3PDT switch is the Radian Ge Treble Booster by AionFX. With the switch open you get the 4n7 and with it closed you get the 4n7 in parallel with either the 6n8 or the 22n for treble, mid, or full range boost. In other news I've just breadboarded a Muffin Fuzz...

    1/4th vs 1/8th W resistors

I guess you also have come across that toy rabbit that sings that f##king song over and over :ROFLMAO:

    1/4th vs 1/8th W resistors

I was warned off ordering resistors from Tayda - don't theirs have those floppy thin leads?

    1/4th vs 1/8th W resistors

I've been buying from mouser in lots of 10 (or 20 for the popular ones) but I'm annoyed at their website - they have many different models of same resistor value even of same brand, so it takes some effort to select every one. And then I find that a load of my latest batch seem to be half the...

    Eternal Burst (Lovepedal Eternity Burst)

I finished the enclosure and boxed it up. Sounds great. Not happy with the finish though - I've tried this 'clearcoat over waterslide decal' approach on both my pedalpcb builds and been far from happy with the clearcoat - this time it did a spectacular orange peel effect on me and looks like...

    Eternal Burst (Lovepedal Eternity Burst)

I settled on A100k for volume, B10K for Tone, and A500k for Drive due to stocks of pots trading off against which pot values matter. I also found that I had no 150n cap so went with a 220n instead - which is what the original TS used so its acceptable I guess. The offboard wiring was greatly...

    Eternal Burst (Lovepedal Eternity Burst)

I thought so too, but when I tried A250k the amount of gain / clipping in the middle of the sweep wasn't as satisfying as with a B250k. I'm anal about having the pedal sound 'great' with all at 12, and falling out the usable range after 3 and before 9. Getting there!

    Eternal Burst (Lovepedal Eternity Burst)

Been playing around with different values to better understand why this circuit has been modified so many times. The drive pot in the feedback loop stops doing much when you get past ~100k (hence the 100k in the Black version). I went with B250k due to stocks. Also, having 20k as a minimum drive...

    Eternal Burst (Lovepedal Eternity Burst)

Working to increase my collection of soft clippers I'm doing a build on this one. I like the design - a TS without buffers and some tweaks to the filtering and clipping. Not sure why the original TS needed transistor buffers anyway, given that the input impedance of an op amp stage is huge...

    Filter Design for Specific Tones

Thinking more about this topic, I recently acquired a Fargen Mini Plex amp, and one of the key features of this amazing little tone machine is the "decade switch" which changes the voice of the amp from 60s (JTM) to 70s (JMP) or 80s. (JCM). The decade switch is a very useful feature and the...

    Eternal Burst (Lovepedal Eternity Burst)

I'd like build a TS clone without the buffers so this seems ideal. However, as I have a 3 diode asymmetric clipper (Gainster), a 4 diode symettric clipper (Bluesbreaker), I'd like to build a mord compressed clipper ie 2 diodes like a TD808. Was there an Eternity version that did this and if so...

    Filter Design for Specific Tones

Really good info, thanks. I will check out the Wampler book(s). Are any of this community into LTspice modelling at all? I'm finding it a great tool for exploring circuits before breadboarding them.
