    Unnecessarily Aesthetic Pedals

I'm very curious if anyone really cares/makes purchasing decisions based on the cattle-call of fancy components. That kind of thing brings out the worst of my insecurity (should I be making investments in Dale resistors/eBay hunting for overpriced NOS components/hiring a graphic designer/etc.)...

    What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

SMD capacitors on a through-hole board? What manner of sorcery...? I cannot for the life of me remember what that tube-emulating not-diode package is called (middle board). Are those still available somewhere, they're very curious!

BUFFER BUSTER & PICKUP SIM Info [Please add your own souvenirs, novelties, party tricks...]

I found this article from Aquataur to be very intriguing. Testing it out on a couple of different fuzz circuits, it looks like sometimes all that's needed is a simple series resistor to increase a buffer's output impedance.

    What's on the workbench?

The demos for this sound pretty dang rad. When this was released I immediately breadboarded the Trident pre-amp this is based on using Balmoral Electric's research. That alone is a killer boost/fuzz even without the transformer and pre-gain boost. Better than a standalone Univibe preamp imo.

CONTEST It's about time... Pedal Giveaway

Of all the various corners of the internet to hang out and talk about obscure hobbies this one has become my favorite. Mostly because it's so active! And everyone is genuinely friendly and has excellent knowledge/opinions/wisdom/perspectives to share. I've been using a stripboard build of a...

Voted Top 3 Overdrive Pedals for BASS???

I hadn't heard of this pedal before but now I'm really interested - the gain/blend works backwards from a standard Klon: more clean is blended in the further the gain knob is cranked.

    Tape saturator diode compressor

Rad! I bet this would be excellent for recording DI into a cheap audio interface with low headroom.

“How did they make that sound” thread

Not just technique, but also enthusiasm. You have to really attack the strings and then you'll get pretty close to that sound with any bright amp.

Are you building or are you playing?

I'd say I'm in both camps - I have a pedalboard that I use for church that I'm 80% happy with so it stays the same for long stretches of time. I'm I'm mostly focused on building (for myself) different kinds of modulation but I do have a to-build backlog of dirt pedals so I can try out different...

CONTEST Buddy's Summer Contest - 1 Knob? No Prob!

PCBs of the 3-knob version of the LM3900 Muff are here and verified! I've squeezed this one into a 1590B but would probably be more comfortable in a 125B. Uses a standard PedalPCB knob layout. Let me know if you'd like one!

Anyone try the soldering iron and damprag trick to remove neck dings?

I have, and it worked OK! The mark was still somewhat visible if you knew where to look. Not perfect but much much better than nothing.

Thanks for the tip - I've gotta try that PAIA circuit ASAP!

CONTEST Buddy's Summer Contest - 1 Knob? No Prob!

For posterity, here's where I ended up with the LM3900 distortion. The submitted one-knob design sounded real good with the four inverting stages but I had some problems when adding a knob to reduce gain. Increasing the input impedance and reducing the feedback capacitors resulted in a very...

CONTEST Buddy's Summer Contest - 1 Knob? No Prob!

Womp womp, of course. I like this fixed mid scoop so much that I might play around with the recovery stage to see if I can get a tone control in there, maybe an active low-pass. Not for this contest, though.

CONTEST Buddy's Summer Contest - 1 Knob? No Prob!

It's a Big Muff tone control with R11/12 acting like a pot set in the middle position. There's probably a more elegant, efficient way to do this, but I was testing out different values using a tone pot and found that it sounded the best in the middle position. I suspect it would work just as...

CONTEST Buddy's Summer Contest - 1 Knob? No Prob!

I've had a bunch of these LM3900 chips hanging around (StompBoxParts sale, anyone else?) and while I plan on making some old-school synths one day, I wondered how it would work in a distortion/fuzz application. I put this Big Muff-style schematic together and fiddled with the capacitor values...

CONTEST Buddy's Summer Contest - 1 Knob? No Prob!

Yep - I had a trimmer on it for the breadboard photo but found that matching drain and source resistors work pretty well. I forgot to mention - that MOSFET section is from PedalPCB's own MOSFET Driver. I was aiming for "MOSFET clipping" instead of more gain much like Wampler's latest Mofetta. I...

Yep! The bias trimmers would be internal.
