I would use an audio probe and check if the signal is reaching the LED/LDRs section, and if it gets out with modulation from there. https://diy-fever.com/misc/audio-probe/ Follow the schematic and hopefully the audioprobe will help you find where is the issue. At least it should help narrow it...

Wait... i just realized this troubleshooting thread is about the TS-50 guitar version... I built the Bass version and according to the build doc, they are different although they look the same. So i can't say if the guitar version is good or "underwhelming".... The bass version is great, though.

Nice build ! I always like to use it before any high gain effect, with the clean/wet ratio set very low (around 9 o'clock) so the modulation is barely noticeable. It subtly "opens up" the chords so to speak. In my top 3 best modulation effects i ever built. I wouldn't use it on single notes...
