Yeah, when you handle the ICs, be careful. I don't think your ICs are cooked based on what you are describing but they are a bit more delicate than others.

I only use fun tak (the American much less fun version of blu tak) only for offboard wiring and sockets. I’ve had some residue on sockets in the past but not so much recently. Maybe I got a bit faster. Also, as others have mentioned, I can remove the tak after one lead and then continue...

Yeah that’s the other thing that makes me hesitate. I guess DIY is not just about saving money, but the fret leveling job is daunting to me, if I consider doing it myself. Or just expensive if I am gonna pay somebody to do it.
