    Median compressor

Great finish and nice build! I noticed you used adapters for the FETs. Was that to ease the process of auditioning / matching the FETS or did your SMD FETs not match the footprint already on the PCB?

    Park and ride Volume problem

Also check for a defective pot, by checking the continuity between all three lugs with an ohm meter DMM setting. It is rare, but I've encountered new defective pots.

    Favorite phase circuit

My favorite, only because it was my second pedal ever, was a 1976 EHX Small Stone. My favorite in my collection now (and the only phaser) is a 1980 Ross 'Phaser,' which is extremely close to the MXR Phase 90 script. The only difference is they added a regenerate control topside, to allow for...

AMI 'Spirit of 76' (Median Compressor)

Check for proper FET orientation, if you have not already. Then and if you have a signal generator, throw a 1kHz sinewave into the pedal and adjust by sight and sound. You will be looking for a linear (smooth, not jumpy) reduction in volume as the 'Compression' control is turned to the right...

Where did you get your 2N5457 FETs?

Measure between pins 2 & 3 (Source and Gate), not gate to ground.

AMI 'Spirit of 76' (Median Compressor)

Good advice from @Robert. It is a trim pot that fine-tunes Q1 to behave symmetrically, allowing or disallowing the audio signal to be sent to ground. If you adjust the trim pot to its extremes, it while sending tone generator into the pedal or a guitar, you will hear the compression cutting in...

Marshall Guv'nor & Alexander Jubilee: same thing?

Pretty much. If I recall correctly, the first DC filter cap (C100) 100uF vs, 10Uf. Blocking cap (C4) 330nF vs. 68Nf. Tl072 vs. RC4558. Treble control taper (A10K vs. B10K). C1 are so close, it is basically the same (9.6uF vs. 10uF). Subtitle differences and IMHO, the Jubilee sounds more...

AMI 'Spirit of 76' (Median Compressor)

You will be happy with it. I used a Urei (UA) 1176 and a Klark Technic 1176 religiously in my friend's recording studio, from about 1985 thru 1999. I also repaired the former once. The Wampler pedal is not an exact clone of that circuit, instead utilizing the essential circuits and gearing it...

Stuff you wanted to know but were afraid to ask

My question is: Why is the musician's equation = (current number + 1)? For example: How many pedals do you really need? A: current number + 1. Happy Friday, everyone!

Is it worth trying to fix a power supply?

I've been repairing tube amps since the 70's and another like issue for vintage Fenders is a poor repair. It is easy to overheat the eyelet or try and reflow old solder, causing the wax and solder to flow to surrounding eyelets. It creates the same parasitic effects you are describing.

    After some thought...

I build small components to tall components and am fastidious, checking the component to its value to the circuit and testing each component's values with a meter. Which is important because especially for overdrives, I deviate from the stock circuits. I don't think this saves time, just...

    Getting drill templates on straight?

Like @Erik S , I use clear tape to hold down the paper and adjust to the contours of the enclosure. Then use an awl to mark center, then use smaller drill bits to create a guide for the bigger drill bits, then use a drill press and a graduated bit to finish. I leave enough tolerance to adjust...

AMI 'Spirit of 76' (Median Compressor)

Agree. Both 1176 based, except Wampler excluded the impedance matching transformer, which adds a little harmonic distortion.

AMI 'Spirit of 76' (Median Compressor)

It all depends on what 'character' you are looking for, but I am going to guess the answer is yes. It can do some of the chicken-pick'in squish that Ross compressors do. It can do the transparent 1176. I use it for making my guitar's tone bigger, by the settings on the first picture. I get...

    Favorite Rat Mods?

I have done a lot of the aforementioned mods. I have been using LM308 NOS (metal cans) and use a 47pF to 82pF c3 compensator cap to slow down the slew rate a little more (IMHO, the 'blur' from the IC and the crunch from the clipper diodes are the signature sound). I also go a little heavier on...

    Modding best practices.

If I have it correct, you are asking about 1.) sister boards (your addition to an existing pedal) and 2.) adding in-series components to existing PCBs? If so @Brett had some great suggestions. For #1, I've been as unsophisticated as wrapping the sister board in blue painter's tape (will not...

    Electrovibe no sound

Takes a smart person to admit a mistake and learn! This is one of the reasons why I use sockets for most ICs, transistors, FETs and the like. The second reason is, less risk of temperature or static damage. The third is ease of any future repair or swap. Once I know the system works, I dab...

    Help with ENGL Screamer 50

The link did not work for me (page not found). Can you better describe the problem? FYI: I've been repairing and build tube amps since the late 70's.
