The Fat Controller (General Tso's Compressor)

Hey Chuck, I managed to get hold of a Fat General to A/B them and they sound almost identical. Thanks very much. It is a very subtle pedal compared to some compressors though. I am more used to the Ross compressor and Keeley 4-knob, both of which I think are much more squashy if that makes sense.

The Fat Controller (General Tso's Compressor)

Hey Chuck, sorry, only just saw this response. Yes, all secure in the enclosure and on the board now. I’ve run the first tests and yes there is a difference. I haven’t managed to do the dark room one yet. I think it‘s just the fact that the Keeley 4 knob clone I used before goes a lot...

The Fat Controller (General Tso's Compressor)

I’m still not 100% convinced it’s working optimally. It’s VERY subtle to the point where I’m never 100% convinced it’s actually doing much if anything at all. I might do some samples and pop a vid here to see what people think.

The Fat Controller (General Tso's Compressor)

Took a while to get here - stupid faulty LDRs (thanks for the assistance Chuck!) but it's all working now.

SOLVED I was on a roll... :( ... General Tso

Turns out a few in the bag of LDRs I got from Amazon were dodgy. I ended up discarding 4 today, plus the faulty one originally fitted. 5 from 10 isn't great!

Happy days! It now seems to be working as it should. It seems to be a bit more subtle than my other compressor but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It seems quieter if that makes sense? I haven't tried it on a heavily distorted guitar but it doesn't seem to amplify the noise/hiss as much...

Thanks Chuck, I'll report back tomorrow when I have redone them. So you think it will be dark enough without the shrink and crossover won't be an issue? I have the external LED in a metal bezel with a rubber stopper on the bottom, so I shouldn't get bleed from that. I'll have a go with just...

Have removed both LEDs and LDRs and will remake the optos. Still confused as to why the LEDs weren't lighting though.

    The other measured fine.

OK, so I desoldered one and it's not getting above 0.6k ! Off to do the other now

SOLVED I was on a roll... :( ... General Tso

So, Before I started desoldering, I cut away the heat shrink to check the LEDs were working - I assume they should be lighting up when I play? They're not. Once I have connected the pedal up and engage the foot switch, they don't light at all when playing. If I take a lead from the battery...

Yeah, nothing doing. Exactly as before. With the switch in the up position, the balance knob goes from silence to normal volume. In the down position none of the knobs do anything at all. The bypassed sound is exactly the same as the sound with the pedal engaged.

As in play test, powered, IC back in etc?

I have a bag from a different batch and they only seem to range from 100-ish ohms to 4.5M

Measuring an LDR from the same bag. In front of a white LED lamp it is about 150 ohms, cover with a cushion and it climbs to about 6.8M (although it seems to take a while to get there - is that normal?) EDIT - I put a thick walled box over it and it got up to about 9M

Sustain pot is 100k - although it's a B100k. Not that the taper matters in this instance. Yep defo 0.965K, not M. I double checked and also wrapped the whole board in a thick cloth to ensure it's dark and got the same reading. Yeah, I have some more of the LDRs. I'll dig them out...

Hey, yes. It has an auto range, but I checked and it was using the mV range. Yeah, I've tested fully boxed. (Ashamed to say I got cocky and boxed before I rocked on this one!) Sustain pins 1-3 measuring 0.965k 9.97k from IC1 pin2 to top of R11.

Hi Chuck, thanks so much for your help. Entirely possible that I had the modes mixed up! All the transistors are the correct parts. From L-R on the board with components facing up, they are BC557B, BC549C, J113, BC557B, BC549C I’m getting 7.3V at Q3-E and 1.35V at Q5-E. I’m pretty...

I double checked I put the correct leg in each hole, but haven’t actually confirmed that the LEDs are lit. I did wonder about those - presumably it compresses when they light up and all of the controls except blend only affect the wet signal? If they weren’t lighting or the LDR wasn’t going...
