Designing myself a breadboard prototyping rig

I am designing myself a full-featured breadboard prototyping rig PCB. Just wanting ideas from others about useful features they have or wish they had in their prototyping setups. So far my design has two MB-102 breadboards, stereo in/out jacks, multiple voltages up to 18v, some SPDT and DPDT...

    Anyone using Circuitlab?

I've hit an issue today where I wanted to simulate a modified cascading LM386 distortion circuit (the Acapulco Gold, but with more controls). CL doesn't have a model for the LM386 and I can't add a SPICE model for opamps. It has been easy to add missing diodes and transistors, but not so for the...

    Anyone using Circuitlab?

Ideally, I'd love to be able to copy schematics between DipTrace and CL for easy production. I haven't checked if it's possible. But even if it's not, drawing a schematic in both CL and DT is pretty easy, and I like doing it, unlike in LTspice.

Glory Hole drill template with dimensions

Sorry, I make my own PCBs these days and don't really build other boards. However, if you search the forum, I have seen that there are quite a few drill templates around. And the product pages sometimes have the drill templates too.

    Anyone using Circuitlab?

OK, I've signed up to CL for a month to see what I can do with it. It's definitely easier to lay out a circuit than it is in LTspice. I knocked up a quick Opamp Nano Muff as a test circuit. It gives a rough idea of output, clipping and frequency response, which is pretty much all I need...

    Anyone using Circuitlab?

I have tried using LTspice in the past and I understand it's the go-to tool for circuit simulation. But I find it counterintuitive to use and generally clunky. I was thinking of giving Circuitlab a go. If it's good enough for Brian Wampler... I mostly need it to calculate impedances, display...

    Bring out yer Diptrace

@rwl Can't help you with the transformer question, because I haven't used them either. +1 for the symmetry on your layout. Nice, clean placement. I have used J201s, which are mainly available in SMD format now and aren't particularly difficult to solder. It might be cheaper and more...

A Pair of Day Dream Delays

Yep that's definitely the case for me too. Although partly that's because I'm usually designing my own PCBs as well. I hear you on fonts, I'm a teacher and we tend to make a lot of posters, so I've got a fair few as well (although maybe not 15k!) It maybe shouldn't be true, but I'm more likely...

A Pair of Day Dream Delays

Nice. I use the same layout for LED - footswitch - logo at the bottom of my builds. And the dress nut. We have similar tastes! I love the font you picked. Internals are clean. These are classy builds 😍

    Modified TS-808

I'm doing stuff like this all the time. Or working out how to combine related circuits so that I can get both flavours with some switching. So much fun.

3 in 1. Malachite, Tyrian, Sanguine. Calling it the Cerberus Preamp

Nice. I've had essentially the same project sitting on my desk for two years but I don't have the motivation to build it. Mine would have PPCB smart relay bypass switching, if I put it together as intended. The Cerberus idea is clever. I like the overall aesthetic you've got going on.

    Noob question VCC and VREF

Perfectly adequate. I've gone through a few phases of calling them different things. The main learning point for newer builders is that a port is going to connect to every other port with the same name.

    Noob question VCC and VREF

But also, for those who come later asking similar questions, you can use any supply pin or port and simply rename it to whatever you like.

    Double Tube Screamer

I also learned how to tweak/hack pedal circuits by doing exactly what you're doing. Keep forging ahead. One of my recent projects was to make a switchable Tubescreamer minus the in/out buffers (otherwise known as a Son of Screamer) but with the option to change the eq tuning before and after...

    Bring out yer Diptrace

All of us in here posting our cute layouts and then the grandmaster comes in and flexes 😂

    Bring out yer Diptrace

Agreed. I also appreciate that this is a learning community and people share what they've learned with others. I've gone from sweating profusely while fumbling my way through soldering my very first LGSM to whipping up my own PCBs, and that doesn't happen without the kindness of people on here. 🙏

    ShamWah - inductor

Sorry for reviving an old thread. Out of interest, would one of these halo inductors fit inside a normal 125B enclosure? The PCB in the design I'm dreaming up would be mounted via input/output jacks so it could be set pretty low.

    Bring out yer Diptrace

Amazing, thanks. Your ground plane shaping there is blowing my mind, I'm still relying on "snap to board outline" I haven't needed to do any separations of ground planes yet, but I'm working on an Ultravibe and a modded Phase 90 that I'm guessing will need more careful planning. In the...

    Bring out yer Diptrace

Do you have a strategy for PCBs with LFOs out of interest? If you are willing to share? No worries if not.

That looks really neat. I wish I could let go of the symmetry and arrange boards this way. What's the circuit? I like your staggered pots in the top row, I'm doing similar on my designs.
