    Intermittent static in TWO EP-3 PRE style pedals.(just a discussion, not troubleshooting!)(now it’s a troubleshooting thread!😅)

You didn't mention it so I'll ask: have you tested the cable between the pedal and amp? Are you using only the single pedal? Do you have pedals the don't have this static?

    Diode Testing on Breadboard

Do you have the probe ground on signal ground? On your sig gen is there a voltage offset? Put your o'scope on DC coupling and look at the input signal, it should be 50% above 0 volts and 50% below. Also try moving the resistor from the input to between the diodes and ground. It should be...

    General capacitor questions

Great discussion here! I dont have much to add but this little bit. +1 Dumble frequently used X5F ceramics. Why he chose these over X7R or C0G or ?? is beyond me, but he is known for the tone of the amps he created. I believe that in some cases, as @Chuck D. Bones just alluded to, a certain...

    Nobelium Gain-Control

From looking at the schematic: a typical gain control would be placed in the signal path after V1b to set the signal level to V1a. Other than the EQ this signal has no attenuation, deleting it might give you a bit more gain. You can see how much of a gain increase this would be by adjusting...

    Intermittent static in TWO EP-3 PRE style pedals.(just a discussion, not troubleshooting!)(now it’s a troubleshooting thread!😅)

Guitar, guitar cable(s), patch cable(s), other pedal(s), amp... On method of troubleshooting would be to plug guitar straight into amp see if you can replicate problem. If not add one thing at a time back and test again. Be sure to give each step plenty of time for issue to manifest. I...

    Its not a pedal though.....

You can parallel another 100nf cap with the one currently there for a total of 200nf. This would be a quick test to let you hear the difference. Nevermind, just realized you cant easily access the leads on the cap currently installed.

    Commercial Build vs DIY Build

Actually since the pedal is upside down when the cover is off its the other way around...but thats just an anal technicality on my part.

    Commercial Build vs DIY Build

For me its comparing apples to oranges. In my mind it should be DIYFY, Do It Yourself For Yourself. When I build something, be it a pedal, amp, or anything else I'm building it because I get a joy from the process of building. Saving $$$ isn't a consideration. At nearly 60 years old my...

Amp Build Help! BE-50 Transformers and Chassis questions.

I would contact Heyboer again and explain about the 5v vs 14v windings, they may not have caught this when they made their recommendation. I have had good luck communicating with APD, maybe reach out to them to see if they do actually carry the correct one. Finally, get with AA Electronics and...

Music Electronics Forum had a LOT of pickup winding info before it went down. Maybe try the Wayback Machine? However if you want to know the true secret to winding read this.

    Fretting about FETs

Sounds like a good theory. IMHO definitely worthy of an LTSpice simulation or breadboard trial. Be aware Q2 input is DC coupled from Q1 output. When Q1 is biased Q2 input bias voltage is also set.

5678 vacuum tubes for a DEFX project?

5678 Tubes I've had great luck dealing with Tube Depot. Send an email detailing exactly what you want and they'll typically do their best to take care of you.

How to reduce the ‘effective throw/travel’ of a volume pot?

I think the 500k linear idea would work, but use a 1meg linear with a resistor connected to the wiper and Max lugs. Start with a 500k resistor to see how the taper is, maybe go up or down from there. Here is a Taper Calculator (click on "Tapered Pot") to help figure out the best resistor to...
